Defending champion CSKA Moscow yielded 91-93 to Greek Panathinaikos in Basketball Euroleague of 2006/07 in a thrilling final at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall in Greece. Spain’s Unicaja was the third once it won 76-74 from Tau Ceramica.
CSKA Moscow failed to defend its Euroleague title against Panathinaikos in a highly-anticipated final at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall (OAKA) in the Greek capital. Before the thriller, CSKA had lost only two games in the entire Euroleague season and arrived to the final with a strong chance to win consecutive Euroleague titles but failed to materialize that hope in the end.
It was Dimitris Diamantidis that led Panathinaikos to glory. He played the key role in the crucial third quarter that the Greens started at 46-36 lead. CSKA advanced to take its sole lead of the game 51-50 but lost control. Diamantidis revived leadership for the Greens at 52-51 and the team held on till the victory.
Apart from Diamantidis, other two-digital scorers of Panathinaikos were Ramunas Siskauskas (20 points and 5 assists), Dejan Tomasevic (16), Mike Batiste and Milos Vujanic (12 each) and Nikos Hatzivrettas (10).
Though of little comfort, but, with 91 in Euroleague final, CSKA Moscow set a new record for most points scored by a losing team, having broken the 84-point records set by Maccabi in 1988, according to euroleague.net.
