The article is probably correct, but it's missing the point. Israel's population has been multiplied by 11 since 1948 due to immigration, yet the percentage of Israeli Arabs has mainly remained the same - it's not possible that the Arabs multiplied themselves that much through natural birthrate - many Palestinian refugees simply returned to their homes and villages to create this reality. The article therefore ignore the additional 4 million Palestinian refugees not living in pre-48 Palestine (mostly in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan), and will return if they have an incentive - like an official 'right of return' for Palestinian refugees in Israel. That will definitely collapse the Jewish majority. I think Olmert and Liberman are correct in worrying about a possible demographic problem. |
