Default A stir over name of Skopje’s airport

A stir over name of Skopje’s airport

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) yesterday approved the renaming of the Skopje airport after Alexander the Great in a move Greece said will harm the country’s ties with its neighbors.

FYROM Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki confirmed the name change and pointed out that the historic military leader was an international figure and not the property of one country.

Milososki said the move is not a concealed attempt by FYROM to monopolize the name and Greece should not take it as a provocation.

But Athens responded by describing the name change as an attempt to use “spurious props from the past” to strengthen its position.

“The attitude shown by Skopje is not in line with its obligations for good-neighborly ties that result from its commitments to the European Union and are not in favor of its Euro-Atlantic ambitions,” said Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.

Diplomatic sources in Skopje said that the name “Alexander the Great” was chosen over the other option, “Alexander of Macedonia,” so the title would be closer to the English name for the 4th century BC hero.

FYROM also approved yesterday the renaming of its second international airport in Ohrid as “Saint Paul.”

Greece has quarreled with FYROM over its name since the former Yugoslav republic declared its independence in 1991.

I think this is just a disgrace.
If Greece does not act on this, I will be extremely angry about it.

Its like Thessaloniki renaming its airport "Julius Caesar Intl." or "Leonardo Da Vinci Airport".

Very insane and Greece MUST NOT let this go ahead.

Does FYROM know that things will get worse after this? Why they made such an action?

FYROM is a joke. The people have no idea of their real national identity.
Everything they think they "know", is actually a fabrication since the end of ww2, thanks to Yugoslavias then dictator Tito who renamed the region among other things which the effects of are being felt today.

Up until what, 1991/2, Alexander the Great, Macedonia and all the history, was Greek. It still is. But since then, we have these "people" to our north, claiming that its their history?
Do they not realise that they are Slavs?
Slavs were not even in the southern balkans/greece in the 4th century bc, let alone the 4th century ad.

Here for anyone who has any doubt as to the identity of these confused people who are trying to fill some pretty big shoes, that are already filled..

Quote:
"We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35).
Also, Mr Gligorov declared:"We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia... Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).
Furthermore,on 24 February 1999, in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM'S Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, "There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country."
The first part is from a former president of FYROM.

ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΑ = ΤΟ ΜΑΚΕΔΝΟΝ ΕΘΝΟΣ = The nation of tall people.

It is really strange how they can claim that they are descendants of the Aristotle and Alexander the Great. They don't speak Greek, and they established themselves in the area in 800 A.D., some 1100 years after Alexander died.

I think this is a bad example. I don't believe anyone would have a problem with that. Probably it would seem hilarious to the Italians. As it seems now to Greeks and to the rest of the well informed people - and to the decision making people.

Do you really think the governments of Europe and the US don't possess the truth or the historical facts? But the game is not played with them. Who cares in the end what happened 2000 years ago.

The question is this:
Are those people trying to get a grip on Greek Macedonia?
OR
Are they just trying to use history as propaganda (as every well-respected nation, including ours) to unite its extremely diverse ethnicities (Albanians-Bulgarians-Slavs with a language that is more Bulgarian than Slavic)?

I believe, trying to answer, to any provocative action like that with arguments (Greek language, writing, religion, heritage, Olympic games, tradition common in southern Greeks and Macedonians) is ludicrous. They don't ****ing care and it doesn't matter in the end.

The best way to assess this dispute is by conquering them. By no means of arms, that will have unstable and short term results, but by culture and economy. Make fast interconnections with their nation and enable the Greek industrialists finish them.
In the end we will have both happy nations richer and with more to lose than to gain in a possible armed dispute.
