Panathinaikos beat CSKA to win its 4th Euroleague title Posted: May 06, 2007 at 17:18 PM EST (22:18 PM GMT)

Mike Batiste had 12 points for Panathinaikos
ATHENS - Panathinaikos won its fourth Euroleague title by beating defending champion CSKA Moscow 93-91 Sunday.
Ramunas Siskauskas made two free throws with five seconds left to secure victory and send the 18,000 crowd at the Athens Olympic Hall into wild celebrations.
It was a record sixth title for coach Zeljko Obradovic with four different teams and his second with Panathinaikos since 2002.
Panathinaikos led 46-36 at halftime, largely thanks to a big second quarter, when the Greek club tied a Final Four record by scoring 28 points. Nikos Hatzivrettas and Milos Vujanic combined for 12 points as Panathinaikos built up its lead.
Panathinaikos shot 68 per cent from the field in the first half.
But CSKA closed the gap at the start of the second half and a layup by Theo Papaloukas left Panathinaikos leading only by two, 47-45. Papaloukas then grabbed a rebound, drove down the length of the court and tied the game with another layup.
Tempers then flared. Panathinaikos was called for a technical and Papaloukas sank three free throws to give CSKA the lead, 51-50.
Dimitris Diamantidis then hit a three-pointer to give Panathinaikos a six-point lead. Dejan Tomasevic, Hatzivrettas and Tomasevic again then made six straight free throws and Panathinaikos was up by 10, 65-55.
CSKA kept chipping away at the Greek lead but could not move closer than four points.
With 3:44 left, Tomasevic made a three-point play for another 10-point lead, 83-73. A three-pointer by Matjaz Smodis made it a five-point game again with three minutes left.
With 1:36 remaining, Siskauskas made a three point-play, only for Trajan Langdon to reply with a three-pointer.
Langdon then hit another with 51 seconds on the clock to leave Panathinaikos up by only two, 87-85.
Mike Batiste made a turnaround jumper to put Panathinaikos up by four, and Langdon then missed another three-point attempt. Panathinaikos fouled but Smodis made only one free throw with 22 seconds left.
Vujanic made two free throws to put Panathinaikos up by five and Smodis was called for an offensive foul. Siskauskas missed both free throws and Papaloukas dunked. Siskauskas made up by making two free throws with five seconds left and secured the victory.
J.R. Holden hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, but CSKA could not retain the title it had won five times.
Papaloukas finished with a game-high 23 points, while Siskauskas had 20 for Panathinaikos.
Diamantidis, who finished with 15 points, made all his shots from the field and missing only one of six free throws, was voted the game's MVP.
Earlier, Markus Brown's layup with 1.2 seconds left gave Unicaja Malaga a 76-74 win over Tau Ceramica in the third-place game.
Brown, who had 14 points, tied the game with two free throws before sinking a three-pointer with under two minutes left to put Unicaja ahead for the only time in the all-Spanish game until the final basket.
Unicaja had trailed 61-51 at the end of the third period.
Unicaja was in its first Final Four appearance, while Tau Ceramica was in its third straight.
Marko Tusek scored 18 points and Pepe Sanchez had eight assists for Unicaja, which made 13-of-26 3-point attempts.
For Tau, Igor Rakocevic had 16 points, Zoran Planinic 15 and Luis Scola 14.
Rakocevic and Scola had three costly turnovers between them late in the game.

CSKA Moscow Yielded to Greek Panathinaikos

Defending champion CSKA Moscow yielded 91-93 to Greek Panathinaikos in Basketball Euroleague of 2006/07 in a thrilling final at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall in Greece. Spain’s Unicaja was the third once it won 76-74 from Tau Ceramica.
CSKA Moscow failed to defend its Euroleague title against Panathinaikos in a highly-anticipated final at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall (OAKA) in the Greek capital. Before the thriller, CSKA had lost only two games in the entire Euroleague season and arrived to the final with a strong chance to win consecutive Euroleague titles but failed to materialize that hope in the end.

It was Dimitris Diamantidis that led Panathinaikos to glory. He played the key role in the crucial third quarter that the Greens started at 46-36 lead. CSKA advanced to take its sole lead of the game 51-50 but lost control. Diamantidis revived leadership for the Greens at 52-51 and the team held on till the victory.

Apart from Diamantidis, other two-digital scorers of Panathinaikos were Ramunas Siskauskas (20 points and 5 assists), Dejan Tomasevic (16), Mike Batiste and Milos Vujanic (12 each) and Nikos Hatzivrettas (10).

Though of little comfort, but, with 91 in Euroleague final, CSKA Moscow set a new record for most points scored by a losing team, having broken the 84-point records set by Maccabi in 1988, according to euroleague.net.

Panathinaikos hailed by Greek media

More storiesPanathinaikos win it all

Panathinaikos' tight victory over CSKA Moscow in the Euroleague final for a fourth title was hailed as their best by Greek media.

"Absolute boss in Europe" read the Ta Nea newspaper headline. "This team has a past, a present and a brilliant future that will force the team to add more stars on their strips."
The Greeks beat the 2006 European champions 93-91 in a thrilling final on Sunday, despite a fierce counter attack by the Russians halfway through the game.
They have won all four of their European titles in 11 years, three of which were under current coach Zelimir Obradovic who took over in 1999.
Thousands of fans poured into a central Athens square, honking their car horns, lighting flares and chanting the team's anthem until early in the morning.
"Lord of the Rings" said the daily Eleftherotypia, adding the team's deep bench and options with which Panathinaikos can play made it hard for any European team to beat them.
Six of their players scored double digit-points compared to CSKA's four, as Panathinaikos showed versatility in attack.
CSKA's Greek guard Theodoros Papaloukas, who almost single-handedly tried to keep his team in the game in the third quarter ignoring fans' jeers, had 23 points but was reduced to tears after the final whistle.
"Every year is better than the last and we hope we also succeed next year in Madrid," club president Pavlos Giannakopoulos said.
Panathinaikos have already won the domestic cup and are expected to easily win the championship with play-offs due to start later this week.
"This is the emperor of Europe," said the daily Eleftheros Typos said.

Theodoros Papaloukas of CSKA Moscow was chosen as MVP for the season, while Dimitris Diamantidis of Panathinaikos was also included as point guard on the All-Euroleague First Team. Papaloukas and Diamantidis were joined on the first team by shooting guard Juan Carlos Navarro of Winterthur FC Barcelona, small forward Trajan Langdon of CSKA, power forward Luis Scola of Tau Ceramica and center Nikola Vujcic of Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The awards dinner also recognized Diamantidis as the Best Defender Trophy winner, Rakocevic as the Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy winner and Rudy Fernandez of DKV Joventut as the Rising Star Trophy winner. All awards were based on a combination of fan and media voting except the top scorer, based on best average points during the season.
