Downer EDI subsidiary, CPG Corporation, to provide full design consultancy for the new Islamabad International Airport's Terminal Building, Pakistan

Downer EDI Limited (Downer EDI) announced today that its Singapore-based business, CPG Corporation (CPG), has been appointed by Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority to provide full design consultancy services for the new Islamabad International Airport's Passenger Terminal Building.

CPG's concept design for the Passenger Terminal has lead to a full design consultancy, including planning, architectural design and engineering consultancy for the terminal, and is the latest addition to CPG's growing portfolio of prestigious airport developments worldwide. The new airport will be Pakistan's first green field civil aerodrome of world-class standard to be built at an estimated cost of US$400 million. The airport will commence construction in 2008 and is expected to be operational by 2010.

The ground breaking ceremony held on 7 April 2007 was attended by Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, and several other senior ministers. This ceremony marked the commencement of ground levelling work which is the first phase of the development. The second phase includes the construction of the Passenger Terminal Building.

"The completion of this airport will herald a new era of modern aviation facilities in Pakistan, as such, this is an important day in the history of Islamabad," shared Farooq Rahmatullah, Director General of Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority.

The new airport will be fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for maximum passenger comfort and convenience. In addition to the Passenger Terminal Building, an airport village is envisaged, comprising commercial facilities and sufficient space to cater to the high ratio of visitors that accompany passengers, as well as possibly a monorail.

The Terminal Building will have a modular design to handle an annual traffic of 6.5 million passengers, keeping in mind the need for extensions to be built in the longer term to accommodate future passenger traffic.

CPG will employ environmentally sustainable strategies such as day lighting and sun shading to reduce the energy usage of the building, as part of a design approach that will ensure a technologically advanced interpretation of this rich cultural heritage including the cradle of the Ghandhara civilisation as well as their long Islamic history.

CPG Consultants' specialised division, CPG Airports, the same team behind the master planning and design of Singapore Changi Airport Terminals One, Two and Three, will undertake this project. Some of their more notable airport projects include Wuhan Tianhe Airport's second terminal building in Central China, Ahmedabad's new International Terminal Building in India, Guangzhou Baiyun Control Tower in China and Can Tho International Airport in Vietnam.
