IBM Israel looks to build “smart cars”
The company’s Haifa laboratory is attempting to reduce congestion and increase safety.
Batya Feldman 27 Jun 07 12:43
Researchers at IBM Israel’s Haifa laboratory are seeking new technologies for use in smart cars, which will help reduce congestion and increase safety. The researchers are examining active safety systems and technologies to help drivers communicate and exchange information with other vehicles and with road infrastructures. They are also seeking systems for changing driving methods and adding preventative measures, and for the provision of critical information to drivers that will help them avoid hazards.
If successful, the project could have huge financial results, since road accidents carry both a tremendous financial as well as human cost. IBM Israel researcher Dan Haviyon, who initiated the collaborative driver project, estimates damages from road accidents in the US alone at $230 billion a year, and in Europe at €160 billion a year. He said that any activity to change this situation was hugely important. “There are many possibilities for using technology to make traffic flow better, prevent congestion, and reduce road accidents,” he said.

“Globes”: How will it work?

Haviyon: “When the computerized system encounters corrective activity, the driver can get feedback, such as stepping on or easing off the accelerator, or turning the steering wheel. The driver can also get audiovisual warnings and will relay among cars up-to-date information via the communications system about changing road conditions, and possible risks ahead.”

Default Hertz, Eldan to add hybrid cars to fleets

Hertz, Eldan to add hybrid cars to fleets

The cars have been earmarked principally for tourists, who prefer cleantech vehicles.
Dalia Tal and Duby Ben Gedalyahu 23 Jul 07 12:38
Car rental companies in Israel have joined the global trend, with the announcement yesterday that they will be incorporating hybrid vehicles, considered economical in fuel consumption and less polluting, in their fleets. Eldan Rent-a-Car Ltd. said that it had bought several dozen Toyota Prius cars, which are earmarked principally for tourists who prefer cleantech vehicles. The company added that it was also negotiating the purchase of further vehicles for its leasing fleet.
In a parallel move, Kesher Rent-A-Car Ltd., the Israeli licensee of Hertz, also announced that it had bought 20 Honda Civic Hybrid cars, which will be offered to the private and business sectors. Kesher - Hertz Israel manager Dani Shimoni said the decision to buy hybrid cars was triggered by demand by customers interested in saving on fuel on consumption and reducing environmental pollution. He added that leading car rental firms worldwide were now buying hybrid cars in ever increasing numbers, in order to meet this demand. Kesher will class the Honda Civic Hybrid under the executive vehicle category, with cars available for rental for periods from one day up to 36 months.

Figures released by the Ministry of Environment reveal that 1,200 hybrid cars were purchased during the first half of 2007, compared with 521 in the same period in 2006. The Environment Ministry attributes the increase in sales to the lowering of purchase tax on cars, and also to higher public awareness of the effect carbon emissions from cars is having on air pollution and global warming.

Also: On Haifa radio there was a suggestion to allow free parking in the city to hybrid and electric cars.
