| Agassi, Ofer meets IEC execs on electric car bid Project Better Place's heads asked IEC for a proposal to recharge electric cars. Dubi Ben-Gedalyahu 27 Nov 07 12:59 Shay Agassi and Idan Ofer, the heads of electric car venture Project Better Place met a group of Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) executives a few days ago to review the technical feasibility and costs of establishing a network of electric recharging stations for the cars. Agassi and Ofer asked IEC for a proposal for the supply of electricity to the stations at a reduced group tariff. The price of electricity is a critical factor for calculating the costs and profitability projections for Project Better Place. The parties discussed a range of technical issues relating to the deployment of the recharging stations, but no conclusions were made. Among other things, Agassi and Ofer asked for a study of locating recharging points at people's homes, where their cars could be recharged overnight. The parties also discussed when during the day car recharging should be carried out. IEC said that if most recharging is made during the night, where there is surplus production capacity, the electricity rates would be lower. However, overnight recharging will require Project Better Place to reduce the number of vehicle rechargings in real time and speed up development of a battery replacement mechanism. | Renault mulls Israel R&D center It is unclear if talks are related to Shai Agassi's electric car venture. Shay Niv and Dubi Ben-Gedalyahu 17 Dec 07 20:53 Sources inform ''Globes'' that French carmaker Renault SA (Euronext:RNO) may establish an R&D center in Israel shortly. Company representatives recently met officials from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor to discuss the matter, but both parties declined to comment about it. It is not known if these talks are related to the establishment of an R&D center affiliated with the electric car venture, Project Better Place, launched by CEO Shai Agassi. "Globes" reported that the cars will be based on the Renault Megane chassis. Former Renault president Dr. Francois Wasservogel, who immigrated to Israel a few years ago, represents the company here. He has become familiar with Israeli companies that can help the car industry, since he has represented Renault in reciprocal procurements since 2005. The Ministry of Industry has proposed that Renault participate in a new program first offered to General Motors Company (NYSE:GM), which Chief Scientist Dr. Eli Opper approved today. Under this program, General Motors can set up a projects and R&D center anywhere in Israel, and not only in outlying areas as initially demanded by the Ministry of Finance. The company will not receive government incentives, however. General Motors will only receive incentives if it collaborates with Israeli companies, half of which must be located in outlying areas or be in low technology industries. Office of the Chief Scientist Royalties Fund director Ran Kiviti said that government aid for each year of the GM R&D center's activity would be subject to the following conditions: 40% of the center's operating expenses must be in Israel or 50% of financing must go to Israeli partners.
