Dov moran, inventor of the worldwide hit "disk on key" portable storage units, launches the next generation - Modu - multi-use 1 giga storage/cellphone/mp3/8.2 megapixel camera/match-maker/bluetooth/gps
all-in-one, depending on "jackets" that the machine will hook up with. It will weigh only 40 grams - world's lightest, and companies will be able to produce their own 'jackets' for marketing artists and products by using it.
Official launch into the market this october. in 2009 more jackets will be added to the "bundle" that will come with the Modu. expected cost is 200 nis, 50$.

מודו הוא מכשיר סלולרי זעיר ומודולרי שניתן לשנות אותו בקלות בהתאם לצרכים ולמצב הרוח, ואף לשלב אותו במכשירים אלקטרוניים אחרים. המכשיר הבסיסי שוקל 40.1 גרם בלבד, ולטענת אנשי החברה הוא הקל בעולם. למרות המשקל הנמוך, הוא כולל תקשורת בלוטות', נגן MP3 וזיכרון של ג'יגה בייט. אולם, היתרון הגדול של מודו הוא יכולתו לשנות את תכונותיו. הדבר נעשה באמצעות Jackets, אביזרים חיצוניים שמודו נכנס לתוכם, ומעניקים לו יכולות נוספות ומראה אחר.

חברות שונות יהיו יכולות למתג את המכשיר. דיסני, למשל, תוכל להציע מכשירים מיוחדים לילדים וחברות אופנה יוכלו לשווק ג'אקטים אופנתיים, המותאמים לבגדים שהן מוכרות.
עד להשקת המכשיר, שתיערך באוקטובר, תציג מודו עשרה ג'אקטים. ב-2009 אמורים לצאת לשוק עשרות ג'אקטים נוספים, שחלקם יעוצבו בסטודיו שיוקם בחברה. במודו מבטיחים שהאביזרים יהיו זולים יחסית, ויעלו כ-200 שקל. נראה כי המכשיר יימכר בחבילה, שתכלול כמה אביזרים (באנדלינג).

This is great, one thing I don't like though is that most of these companies with excellant technology sell themselves too early. In my opinion, a lot of them could have become huge companies and instead sold off early. M-systems is an example of that, today their disk on key technology is selling like a hot cake, they could have had a lot more value. While selling out is essential for a lot of start-ups, Israel needs to start building and maintaining billion dollar companies

I think one problem for startup companies like this is getting out their product to the outside world. A no-name startup simply does not have a resources and/or the advertizing power to go out and make their product known. In other words, if they had retained the rights to the product, it probably wouldn't have sold 'like a hot cake'. However, I do agree that there are other alternatives, like partnering up with larger multi-national companies in order to sell the product.

theres only two options: either buy big global companies and production lines, or make an "exit", sell and continue to work on r&d or component side-production, as a division the intl global firm. with the disk on key I think there was a problem on getting patent status because the usb technology itself was not patented. but you are right that this exit strategy in the long run is not very healthy as a model for growing the industry. but our main strong point a lot of times isnt in controlling production lines sale and distribution, its new r&d and adding value through patent applications on existing technologies and global systems.
