| No smoking - soon in a city near you Israel Cancer Association, Union of Local Authorities launch 'No Smoking City' project The Israel Cancer Association and the Union of Local Authorities launched the "No Smoking City" project Wednesday, outlining the measures local authorities would have to take to be awarded the status. The project's vision is for cities throughout Israel to compete against each other for the "no smoking" title, for which they will be graded according to set criteria. Heads of the local authorities would have to publicly announce the authority's commitment to the project and prepare a task force of volunteers. A pamphlet on the subject, set to be distributed throughout the local authorities, includes instructions on how to meet the project's requirements. Further steps in fulfilling the project include using bolder measures to enforce the no smoking policy in public areas, and a public complaints committee to handle callers' complaints regarding smoking in no smoking areas. In addition, local authorities will also promote no smoking support groups. Cities participating in the project will compete for the title of "a no smoking city", while special criteria will determine the level of smoking in each particular city. Additionally, the number of smoking and non smoking residents in each city will be determined as well as the number of urban buildings and business with no smoking policies. The number of volunteers and inspectors enforcing the policy will also be determined and the budget designated to each authority calculated accordingly. Miri Ziv, director of the Israel Cancer Association, said at the launch: "Local authorities still have a long way to go when it comes to enforcing the no smoking laws in public areas. The norms must be changed just as they were in cinemas and busses. Profits unharmed Health Ministry data has shown that a quarter of the adult population in Israel are smokers. Additionally, Israel Cancer Association findings show that some 10,000 people a year die as a result of smoking related ailments. In a recent survey conducted among smokers by the Israel Cancer Association, 95 percent said they would stop smoking and would put out a cigarette in a public place if they were asked politely. Only four percent said they would refuse the request. Dr Milcha Donchin who chairs the liaison committee of healthy Israeli cities (and who devised the program), noted that implementation of the project would reduce the number of smokers in Israel. Other evidence has revealed that implementation of a no smoking policy throughout businesses and restaurants is not detrimental to the establishments' profits. Yaacov Agmon, director general of the local authority, stressed that the local authority will place special attention this year on enforcing the law prohibiting cigarette sales to minors passed in 2004.

| Yeah, they're doing that in the UK. I'm actually making a documentary about it in my Media classes. They're banning smoking in pubs, clubs, resturants. | |||||||||||
