| LA CORUNA, Spain - Deportivo La Coruna and Israel goalkeeper Dudu Awat doesn't believe media reports that prior to Israel's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia last month, goalkeeping coach Alexander Ubarov said that Awat considered himself to be the world's best goalkeeper and that Israel captain Yossi Benayoun doesn't pass the ball to his teammates. But as far as he is concerned at least, Awat has no problem with the content of what Ubarov did or didn't say. "In my case, he's right," Awat says. "I do think I'm the best goalkeeper in the world. I have nothing left to learn or to improve; my only goal is to train well so that I can do things as best as possible." In an interview to be published tomorrow by the Shocken Group's chain of local papers, Awat says: "I am on top of the world. I have joined a big club, a club that I always dreamed of joining. Everything I have achieved isn't down to anyone else - not journalists and not coaches; everything I have achieved has been of my own merit. I'm proud of that. With my ability, if I had good connections, I would be prime minister. Unfortunately, success in Israel comes down to connections, unlike everywhere else in the world, where ability is measured on the pitch. That's the reason we look like we do and not just in sports." Awat goes on to blame the press for the fact that he has not always been top of the popularity standings here. "If things were judged by achievements, I would be a lot more popular in Israel. But I have never felt second to anybody. I have always been first. If I had taken to heart the way I have been treated by the media, my career would have been over by now. Once I thought of hiring a PR adviser, but the only thing I am concerned with is sporting success." The former Maccabi Haifa goalkeeper concludes on another modest note. "Yossi Benayoun and I could easily play for Barcelona or Real Madrid, but my goal is to make history and reach the European Championship with Israel." | |||||||||||
