Subway Restaurants is returning to Israel after a hiatus of several years. The sandwich chain has rented a 130-square meter restaurant in Beit Corex on Maskit Street in Herzliya Pituah will pay NIS 130 per square meter per month in a five-year lease with a five-year option to extend.

Subway's previous Israeli franchisee had 21 restaurants in Israel before it closed down. The new franchisee, Gur Gal, previously served as manager of the Royal Tulip Hotel in Eilat, owned by Fattal Hotel Management Ltd.

Gal said that he plans to open 130 Subway restaurants nationwide, and was currently in talks to rent a 100-square meter restaurant on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv.

Gal said, "Beit Corex is located in the high-tech area of Herzliya Pituah, where there is a suitable target audience for Subway. We conducted market research, which found that most of the people in the high-tech area of Herzliya Pituah know about the brand."

Subway, founded in Connecticut, currently has 31,000 branches in 90 countries worldwide.

they closed because they were way too expensive and also in not so good locations. every large cafe chain today offers you fresh veg/meat sandwiches salads and burekas selections not to mention shawarma in a lafa which is tasty and cheaper so they have a lot of competition. If they can price themselves as cheap as buying shawarma and offer big sitting areas maybe they have a chance. The thing that is really missing here is mexican fast food like tacos, nachos.

Subway is a chain that sells franchises (turnkey operation, with systems for every aspect of the business). In the U.S. they are very competitive price wise. Foot long sandwiches (30 cm.) for $5.

The stores are small and most of the business is take out. Their success is in their freshly baked bread in each store as well as fresh ingredients sandwich meat and vegetables.

The new Israeli franchise is going to put the stores in place where quality is more important than price. There first store will be in Herzelia Petuach.

Honestly, I find Subway to be overrated. Personally, I don't like the trimmings at makes my sandwiches there very small forcing me to double the meat for more, especially on those five dollar footlongs. The only good sandwich they have is the piled high pastrami, but the rest is pretty much bland or not much. Quizno's and Blimpies give better sandwiches than Subway does anyway.

I wonder, do they only serve kosher meats at Subway (and kosher cheese, for that matter) in Israel?
