In an era of rising environmental awareness, it is necessary to provoke the society in order to change the way it perceives energy use. International practice Sériès et Sériès has been awarded second place for Greenoplasty – the design of Los Angeles Cleentech Corridor and Green District – their successful proposal offered inspiring environment, allowing its residents to look beyond the common and the easily consumed, in favor of the responsive, daring and stimulating. SES’s design has derived from strong belief that the urban planning has to propose radically new and more environmentally conscious way of living which further helps breaking old habits.

In this particular case of the Cleantech Corridor, their urban strategy consisted of compressing the four mile site by implementing a local tram way and proposing new zoning for specific areas, in order to promote most sustainable way of commuting and give space back to the pedestrian. Architects at SES committed to keep as much of the existing context intact, while giving the residents their right to the city and public space.

Advocating radical changes in perception and common thought into the realm of what was never been done before, SES started locally – with the street. Transverse streets of the corridor became pedestrian, each terminating at the vertical garden, and therefore becoming series of destination instead of spaces of conveyance. Furthermore, they re-investigated Cartesian grid, arguing that its removal would help to reinforce the way people usually clarify spaces in metropolises like Los Angeles. Necessary accent of the whole corridor is the model Cleantech Facility, which floats over the city like a balloon, restrained by thin cables – it sits on a mirrored base, so its connection the ground is deceiving and evokes the impossible. In fact, it could be stated that the whole Greenoplasty Corridor is a tribute to the impossible.

Zaha Hadid Architects won the competition for The King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This organic, amorphous metro station will be located on the edge of the Financial District and will serve as a major hub between most important city’s metro lines. The station will is planned as integrated within the urban context of the district, responding to the functional challenges of one multimodal transport center as well as the district’s future vision. The smoothly curved station spreads over six platforms over four public floors and two levels of underground car parking.

In order to emphasize the building’s importance as a multi-functional, mixed-use, dynamic public space, the project of the The King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station extends beyond the simple station typology. Not only that the station will act as an intermediate space perceived through quick transitions, but it will also provide great and dramatic public space for the city of Riyadh.

The station is placed at the center of a network of pathways, sky bridges and metro lines, according to the KAFD master plan. In order to clearly delineate the pedestrian routes within the building, avoid congestion and optimize circulation, lot of attention has been paid mapping the connectivity diagrams and the traffic across the site. As a result, the internal organization resembles of three-dimensional lattice, acting as the spine for the building’s circulation, defined by a sequence of opposing sine-waves, generated from the frequency variation of station’s daily traffic flows. The waves are extended to the envelope, therefore defining the architectural concept, both in the exterior and the interior.

The international architectural competition for Central Prishtina Mosque, held in March 2013 still doesn’t have a clear winner. This proposal by OODA + AND-RÉ is one of over seventy entries, and the design is a result of an intense research on the mosque theme, ranging from a profound historical study of cultural heritage, to analyzing the evolution over time, both in program and in the materiality and form, understanding the social and urban factors as well as the different geographical characteristics. The proposed dome-like mosque is an affirmation of all the values studied, and outcome which is a landmark design in its conceptual, coherent solution and bold, clear and logical structure.

Monumental design of OODA + AND-RÉ’s proposal accomplishes set standards and conditions, responding to the proposed goals. It stands as a landmark, but still being able to be responsible and objective. It is human-related by the form and scale and is conceived for the future, as all well-designed and thoughtful architecture should be, in terms of materials, capacity, configuration and innovative concept. The bipartite design solution embodies tradition but in a contemporary manner and stands out in the landscape, respecting the surrounding. The architects created space that strongly enhances spirituality, while promoting and embracing a wider social role.

The design is sustainable and environmentally friendly and is adaptive to different occupational needs – the design allows the flexible physical space to be adapted to a versatile number of users, by diving and expanding the spaces in wide range of configurations.

The Golden State Warriors recently announced that Snøhetta and AECOM have been selected as the architecture team to design the Warriors’ new sports and entertainment complex on the San Francisco waterfront. Designed to replace the team’s existing home at the Oracle Arena in Oakland when the lease expires in 2017, Golden State Warriors’ Stadium is scheduled to debut on San Francisco waterfront site for the 2017-18 NBA basketball season. This landmark design will offer expensive open space with the 728.000 square foot arena, along with retail space, ferry and cruise ship access and waterside fire station. 18.000-seat venue will welcome music concerts, conventions and wide range of cultural events.

The circular building is wrapped in large areas of glazing around the facade, in order to provide visitors with a view from outside into the practice facility and the arena during games. The large disc-like roof is designed to be covered with LEDs and will be used for the projections.

The Arena will serve as a model for a 21st century digital sports and entertainment center, due to its innovative, sustainability and technology oriented design. The architects believe that the design lives up to the importance of this very unique waterfront site and it’s a successful compromise between the vision of the Golden State Warriors, the landscape of the bay and the very important community input they have collected over months.

Umbrella Mechanism for Madrid Pavilion

Umbrella Mechanism for Madrid Pavilion

3Gatti Architecture Studio will add a facade of opening and closing steel umbrellas to Foreign Office Architects’ Madrid Pavilion from the 2010 Shanghai Expo. The new cladding, designed by 3Gatti Architecture Studio of Rome and Shanghai will replace bamboo louvers that currently surround the glazed walls of the building, which was originally designed by the Foreign Office Architects, to accommodate an exhibition about low-cost housing for the world fair. The new façade of opening and closing steel umbrellas will be added to the pavilion instead of the old one that started to rot. In the words of the architects they came up with the idea because of the very sunny weather in Shanghai which forces lot of people to use umbrellas all the time, as a most common object used for sun shading.

The same as with the existing bamboo shutters, occupants will be able to adjust the shades to control the light levels within the building – the previous solution of the Madrid Pavilion was a system controlled by the users. They moved the folding shades horizontally. 3Gatti’s intervention has changed the present shades into a more familiar object.

The idea was to make each umbrella able to be controlled by a pulley, allowing people to interact with it. The rest of the mechanism is identical to the one of the umbrella but the mechanical parts are made of stainless steel, the frames of aluminum and the external surface of perforated corten steel. The ground floor elevations will be glazed to allow more visibility into the shops at this level.
The final spire of 'one world trade center' was supposed to be raised today, but inclement weather, more specifically strong winds have caused the particularly symbolic ceremony to be postponed. the final section would mark a stage of completion for what is reportedly thetallest building in lower manhattan. the SOM-designed soaring glazed form is accompanied by santiago calatrava's sweeping transportation hub, itself characterized by below-grade oculus. the tower is the first to rise on the site of the actual world trade center, thereby imbuing it with a sense of distinct venerableness and an inherent quality of triumph and hope. the topping out ceremony will mark the completion of the bulk of construction work on the 1776 foot tall structure; its spires alone weigh in at over 722 tons. topping out procedures are expected to be rescheduled when weather conditions improve.

Due to the fact that the main purpose of Beijiao Sports Center in China, designed by Decode Urbanism Office, is to serve people and surrounding neighborhoods, it was of crucial importance to design it as a multi-functional and friendly, gathering place. The traditional concept and the image of the sport facility are abandoned, in favor to a vivid, active space full of energy night and day, both during sport events and after. The aim of the architects was to create a community space for higher social resilience.
The divergent general layout creates a base and city with permeable interface between the site and the existing, surrounding urban context, and activity venues of various sizes are formed. Created spaces differ in height; therefore allow the host wide range of outdoor activities.

This amusing and playful design is unifying in its concept and it brings together separate spaces into one, through a central “event” – the valley. The design also introduces the rising trend of ecological architecture. The valley is the center of all the activities, moderately sized sport field is located in one side of the central gathering place and is utilized both as a field for sport activities and outdoor performance venue. The platform of the valley is extended outwards so that it became a roof and formed the auditorium. Great porosity of the geometry of the valley allows it to be adaptable and to create flexible multi-purpose spaces for different events, such as shopping, performing, lecture and exercise. The ground level of the park provides the development with a pleasant environment for the hot summer days.

London firm Farshid Moussavi Architecture has won a competition to design an apartment block in Montpellier, Southern France. Les Jardins de la Lironde in Montpellier is residential complex of elegant homes on the outskirts of the city – Les Folies Montpellieraines as eighteenth century bourgeoisie called it.

Continuing its tradition of innovative architecture, the city has commissioned the first prize winner to design first of twelve folies to be built. The site of the future residential tower is located in the green surrounding on the periphery. In order to minimize the impact on the landscape of the site, the tiny high-rise is designed to have smallest possible footprint. In order to decrease size of the floor plans, the area of shared communications and internal circulation space in general are designed as least possible, therefore providing the maximum amount of privacy.

Five different unit typologies are distributed four on each floor of Lot 2, which are dual aspect, benefiting from multiple views and natural cross-ventilation. Refusing to adopt orthogonal geometry, the curvilinear floor plates provide multi-directional visual communication between the inside and the outside. Due to irregular curvilinear design, the building has an advantage of large self-shading parts of the exterior envelope – the curvature on the north side is more gradual while it is more acute on the southern exposure. As a substitute, the areas of the façade which are not self-shaded are provided with operable louvers, which add vitality to the building.

The jury for the international competition for Prishtina Central Mosque failed to agree on a clear first prize winner; however it seems that some of the un-awarded entries caught the attention as well. MI’RAJ is the proposal of APTUM, Swiss / American architectural practice, named by one of two parts of the night ascension journey that the Islamic prophet Muhammad took one night. The proposal materializes the journey of ascension to prayer and the spatial experience that follows. Islamic community of Prishtina was searching for a unifying symbol and identity that can bring together many disparate mosques of Kosovo capital, APTUM’s design harnesses that need and brings together a sense of place and provides public space for the greater good of the community.

Stairs are wrapping the south side of the building and the journey begins. At the end of the slow stairs, the round plaza opens, providing the great space for sitting, relaxing of proceeding to the very entry of the mosque. The plaza is suitable for gathering, contemplating or simply enjoying the weather.

The prayer hall is approached through a series of fan-like arches. As one enters the hall, he finds a multi-level space with light shining from far above his head – a shimmering dome is hovering high in the space.

Due to the grandeur of the space of the prayer hall, the one can be suspended as a part of a larger divine whole. After the prayer is finished, people proceed back through the ablution space, down the stairs or ramp, reemerging back to the community plaza, where they can choose how to continue the soul journey with their family and friends.

The Mosque, proposed by APTUM, shows contemporary and innovative investigation in direction of finding new modalities for designing Islamic spatial experience, which follows the physical and spiritual journey.

Mixed-use vertical farm designed by Brandon Martella for the city of San Diego. The project is located next to the waterfront and the historical Gaslamp district.

Food as a resource is limited. Supply will soon not meet demand. With population growth, food production in the United States is reaching maximum capacity. Current trends in development create a struggle between farming and living. These two practices are modeled for their own benefit and are soon to clash in a disastrous agglomeration. According to the FDA, the average American alone consumes 707.7lbs of fruits and vegetables each year. With the majority of produce coming from the Imperial Valley, Central California Valley, neighboring states and other countries the 30,000 plus residents of San Diego’s central urban context consume 21,231,000 pounds of produce each year. Where will we get our food? Transparency in the food industry needs to occur and enlighten blinded consumers. Our city needs to handle this critical issue with an architecture that responds.

A new type of residential tower needs to come forth. Utilizing vertical farming, a new model of living can be tested and resolved in a dense vertical community. With local production comes local exchange. A new type of market will become a specimen of culture that dramatically contrasts the a-typical American means of consumption, an apparatus enriched with an exchange of local produce, and a place for the community to gather. The farm tower located in a vertical community of tourist resources and developer condos will provide fresh produce daily to celebrate a direct injection of goods from farm to market. It will create new opportunities for education, commerce, and healthy living while utilizing the local by products of city living.

Waste, grey water and black water can all be redeemed through recycling, grey water infused aquaponics, and black water compact combustion to create thermal energy. This new form of residential high-rise can be plugged into the existing city grid injected with the by products of its traditional equivalents to produce something responsible, something different from its otherwise insular counterparts. Vertical crops can grow food hydroponically supporting the greater masses directly, and allowing for reclamation of delusive farmland.

The adjacent Children’s Museum with its motto of Think, Play, and Create will be embraced with a second motto to foster a new level of social interface and engage a community from farm to market from community to education; lets Live, Share, and Grow within our city.

Coop Himmelb(l)au’s design for the the new Grand Theatre and International Culture & Art Center for Changsha, China, won by Zaha Hadid Architects, is offering unique and eclectic design, full of surprising turns. The site of the competition is located on the northeaster side of the newly created Changsha Meixi Lake in the Daheexi District and the proposed design is engaging both the water and the ground. Undulating white form is announcing the shiny and smooth spectacle while the architects wanted to create a new cultural center that interacts with the existing natural landscape, visually and scientifically – the development was designed to use alternative energy sources and efficient passive energy systems, in order to minimize environmental impact.

The overall concept was driven by the aim to position the elements of the Center like the objects of an urban Chinese garden, where the elements of water, stones, hills, bridges and flowers are transformed into urban shapes animating and vitalizing the daily life of the entire Daheexi District. The waterfront promenade closes the loop between the west and east end of the development opening with a generous plaza in front of the Grand Theater. By thickening the surface, the ground becomes flexible and lively landscape that integrates the service and leisure facilities in order to provide an active and attractive support for the cultural site.

Roof garden with its naturally shaped waves provides a plateau for sport and recreation possibilities as well as refreshing water surfaces and natural ventilation. Sweeping curves were used to create strong relationships between structure, landscape and city in order to envision a new cultural hub for the Chinese city of Changsha.

Designed as an experimental hybrid between urbanism and landscape design, BIG’s proposal is a winning entry for EuropaCity. Along with fellow team members Tess, Transsolar, Base, Transitec and Michel Forgue, Denmark based architectural office will be in charge for designing the new urban center in France, between Paris and Roissy. It will be a mixture of retail, culture and leisure, gathered around the defining theme of the European urban experience, diversity and culture.

The winning proposal is a sustainable urban form, combining dense city with an open landscape and is predestined to become a cultural and commercial gathering point for surrounding cities. Recreational areas, hiking paths and urban farming found its place at the accessible green roof that covers the whole city. The vast roof features allow visitors to experience the panoramic views of central Paris and La Defense skylines.

The new contemporary urban settlement is designed as a laboratory for sustainable technologies and experimental ground for viable green tech implementations which not only save energy but improve the quality of urban environment. The chain of culture and leisure programs like concert halls, skiing hill, swimming pools and urban farming form an urban ecosystem where the resources feed each other. Waste heat form retail is channeled into leisure spas, water is reused for irrigation. EuropaCity is actually going to provide the surrounding neighborhoods with district heating and cooling. The development will be powered with the powerful combination of solar, biofuel and geothermal energy.

McDonald’s and the fuel station are gathered under the same roof in one of the newly urbanized parts of the seaside city of Batumi, Georgia. Designed by Giorgi Khmaladze, ambitious piece of art includes also recreational spaces and reflective pool. Due to the importance of the given location, the imperative was to maximize the recreational area therefore the footprint of the building is very limited as well as the vehicular circulation. As a result, all the contents are compressed in one volume.

Two major programs – dining and vehicle service are physically and visually isolated from one another, so that the operations at the fuel station are not visible from the restaurant. Restaurant starts from the lobby and is having a separate entrance on the ground floor. The interior is designed in a manner that offers smooth and seamless transition between levels, the floor steps upwards creating inhabitable decks on intermediate levels which are actually occupied as dining spaces. Views from the restaurant spaces are partly directed towards outside water features while the rest look into open air patio on the second level. The patio acts as a buffer zone, ensuring soundproof interior space and open air lounge. Giant cantilever canopy is covered in vegetation, acting as an ecological shield for the shaded terrace while also helps avoiding energy loss.

Due to predefined extra small footprint, in order to maximize rationality of the design, most of the supporting and utility spaces are grouped and located on the ground level, so the technical access points are easily approachable

In words of the architects at Saraiva + Associados, the ambition was to design landmark building for Awaza Congress Center in Turkmenistan, not only as a national monument, but an icon that would be recognized internationally. Its monumental form is derived from a strong symbolic concept which reflects patriotic and cultural values of the country. Transmitting internal organization of Turkmenistan, the volume of the building is broken into five larger groups of spaces, materializing five provinces and forming a Congress Hall as a whole. Five elements are Circulation element, Auditorium element, Events, Business and Square element. National motifs in interiors and dominant green color tone – color of Turkmenistan flag reflect patriotic aims.

Functional organization is directed by major requirements of a modern Congress Center, which has to enable heavy use and constant visits. Organizational scheme of this building is based on open spaces – atrium and circulations, which provide a balance with large scale and heavy volumes of the Center. The direct connection of the spaces to atrium is designed as an enclosed plaza of several levels. The building facilitates three auditoriums with 3900 seats, two negotiation rooms with 420 seats and four meeting rooms with 520 seats. The restaurant with a ballroom, Snack-bar and Gourmet Restaurant with a capacity of 2450 people ensure that this Congress Center meets high standards of modern buildings of this type.

Besides the aim to design an architectural piece that would perfectly fit into the urban context, the architects wanted to create a building with an empty coastline and pleasant plaza, overlooking the Caspian Sea.

Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan, by Foster + Partners, is designed to serve as a main gateway to Amman, one of the oldest cities in the world as well as to continue exploration airport terminals as the new building typology. Its visionary yet cellular architecture supports local building expertise and Amman’s climate, therefore integrating strategies which successfully provide efficient passive design. Modular and flexible concept of the terminal allows for future expansion, ensuring annual growth of 6 percent and increasing capacity from 3 million to 12.8 million passengers per year by 2030 – the Airport is predestined to be the most important hub for Levant region.

Located in Amman where summer temperatures vary markedly between daytime and nighttime, architects at Foster + Partners used concrete as a main material – high thermal mass provides high passive environmental control.

Plants and trees in open-air courtyards filter pollution and precondition air before it is drawn into the system. The large forecourt is designed as a landscaped plaza with seating in shade and allows people to gather while saying goodbye or welcoming returning travelers.

In order to enable seamless expansion over time, each dome of the tessellated roof canopy is a modular, semi-autonomous unit. They branch out from supporting columns like leaves of a desert palm with the geometric pattern applied to each, representing the veins of a leaf.

All facades of the terminal are designed in glass, opening long views to the aircraft. Central building of the terminal contains main areas and public contents – shops, lounges and restaurants.
