Hiriya Landfill Rehabilitation and Ariel Sharon Park

The Hiriya landfill, located between Ramat Gan and Tel Aviv is a mountain of garbage that was used from 1952 until 1998.

From a distance, Hiriya appears as the "Mystic Mountain" in the midst of the spacious Ayalon plain. By preserving its striking silhouette from the outside, the inside becomes a landscape, an open and public mediterranean scene, in its core the fountain as the symbol for nature. In the future, the Ayalon river will meander freely, and a flat ramp will wind up to the plateau, adjusting to the existing shape. A new tree-covered terrace will support the foot of the mountain offering a wide variety of possible uses

    I don't know

On Oct 28, Israel's president, prime minister, senior politicians, mayors and business leaders plan to gather on this flat-topped brown mound, and name it the Ariel Sharon Park. Ensuring that Hiriya and the flat flood lands around it would be reclaimed as open green space for the residents of southern Tel Aviv, rather than falling into the hands of eager real estate developers, was one of the last and lesser known battles fought by Mr. Sharon. The Hiriya dump, closed nine years ago, will serve as the centerpiece for what is to become a vast 2000 acre urban wilderness. The monumental dirt mountain, which sits at the intersection of some of Israel's busiest highways, will be transformed into a beauty spot designed by a German landscape architect Peter Latz. There were real estate developers who had other ideas primarily to build 10000 housing units on the flatlands. And they hired some of the country's top lawyers to try to get their way. But when the crucial vote came up in the National Planning Committee, Mr. Sharon took command. Determined to get a unanimous decision against the developers and in favor of the park, the prime minister personally called up all the ministers the night before.
