| Josh / Zohar, That's the Khurva Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, also known as the Khurba Synagogue (khurba means ruin in Hebrew). It's currently being re-built. If you've ever been to the Jewish Quarter, you may recall a large stone arch spanning a small plaza. The arch commemorated the destruction of the Khurva by the Jordanians in 1948. You can see the arch in the partially re-constructied synagogue above. Here are some more pic's: ![]() The dome of the Khurva once dominated the Old City skyline. ![]() The Khurva rose 82 feet above the ground; note the arch below the dome. ![]() Interior of the Khurva, 1935 ![]() 1948 ![]() Commemorative arch built after the Six-Day War ![]() Removing the commemorative arch, January 2006 ![]() Re-construction ![]() Re-construction, July, 2007 ![]() Model of the Khurva Synagogue at the Israel Museum Link to Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurva_Synagogue Last edited by Elkhanan; 11th November 2007 at 06:23. | |||||||||||
