Here is a brief introduction that I wrote for school about Shanghai. Hope you enjoy!

At the opening of the 20th century Shanghai reigned as the financial and cultural capital of Asia. World War II and the Communist revolution took heavy tolls on the city and its people but as we begin a new century Shanghai is poised to regain its position as world class city- the "Pearl of the Orient". For the past 12 years the city has experienced +10% gdp growth to over $65 billion and the population has risen to 16 million.

Building on a solid base of automotive, ship building, electronics and chemicals industry, Shanghai's leaders decided to modernise the economy by establishing the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park for the research and development of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology and software. Now home to 1,200 domestic and international companies representing an investment of $8 billion, the park marks a new direction in the Chinese economy away from mass production and towards the creation and development of new technologies.

Shanghai's remergence as Asia's financial center is fast becoming reality- already 15 Chinese banks and dozens of international financial institiutions have established headquartes here. Shanghai is home to China's largest stock exchange, a petroleum exchange and a fast growing diamond exchange.

Shanghai has also pursued the goal of becoming an Asian cultural capital. The past decade has seen the construction of dozens of futuristic venues ranging from a grand opera house to state of the art concert halls and scores of museums. The Shanghai Biennale showcases the latest contemporary art while Shanghai Fashion Week plays host to the biggest names of the fashion world.
