^ actually i thought it is vice versa. (portuguese call it Macao)
and in older times many others called it Macao too, so did we germans...(the french still say "Macao")
if i remember rite, the place was called "A Ma Gao" b4 the portuguese came

it was the longest european colony in China, dating back to the 16th century untill december 1999.
since then it is called Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China

and old german map of Macau:

Macau and its surrounding:

Macau was a peninsula and 2 islands (Taipa and Coloane)
a (still ongoing) reclamation [called 'Cotai') between the 2 Islands depletes it to just one island.

.

Here are some of my shots (sorry i have more, but not online atm):

^ at Macau Tower. between the ppl u can see the Macau BOC, current tallest Bldg
they are doing "The Skywalk"

^ Ruins of St.Paul's, seen from Rua de S. Paulo

^ some slender buildings, not far from Largo do Senado

^ an alley just south of the west part of Avenida Almeida Ribeira

.

more pics (not from me):

^ aerial, looking southwards
from foreground to background: Macau Peninsula, Taipa Island, Coloane Island
(its an older pic, the Macau Tower is still u/c)

at Taipa Island, looking northwards, in background is the Macau-Taipa Bridge

^ Macau skyline, seen from a hill at Taipa Island

^ Ponte Amizade (Friendship Bridge), seen from Taipa Island

^ seen from the Fortaleza de Monte, looking west, on the other side of the harbour is Zuhai

^ the Westin Hotel and the golf course, at Hac-Sa beach on Coloane

^ at Guia hill, looking southwards

^ at Guia hill, looking westwards

^ at the reclaimed land between Nam Van Lakes and Baia da Praia de Grande, looking norteastwards

^an old pic of Penha Hill, the position of the chinese junk is now the Nam Van Lakes

^ the Macau Tower, seen from the pace of the Penha church on Penha Hill

(following pic sometimes load, sometimes not, trekearth sucks in hotlinking;
just rightclick on features, copy the URL and open in a new window, should work, it's worth a look!!!)

^ at right is Macau's newest bridge, between southwest tip of Macau Peninsula and nortwest of Taipa Island
and it is the 3rd bridge between Macao and Taipa.

more will come!
