Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Financial District

Starting of the tour of NYC neighborhoods comes the hood known as the Financial Dist. It is everything that is below Chambers St with the exeception of Church St, Park Row, the Brooklyn Br between the Hudson River, with West St, and East River. This hood is both commercial and residential. Originally, it was first settled in 1626 after Peter Minuit bought the land from the Manhattan tribe in $24 worth in merchandice he brought from Holland and named it New Amsterdamn along with the colony being New Netherlands after the country and capital of the Netherlands with a wall on what was then the outer rims of the city hence the name Wall St to its side. In 1664, the English took over the colony and renamed it NY and the city NYC after the Noble Duke of York, the brother of King James II after the overthrowing of Peter Stuyvesant. Throughout the early 1700's, the tip began to expand as the shipping channels that are today's Broad St, Peck Slip, and Old Slip began to be filled in. In 1733, Bolwing Green was made as the city's very first park. In 1766, St Paul's Chapel was built as the oldest church in Manhattan. Durring the American Revolution (1775-1783), the statue of King George III was taken down by patroits and made into bullets since it was made of iron. In 1776, a fire hit NYC causing for numerous buildings to be burnned down as well as the original Trinity Church. In 1789, George Washington was innagurated as the first US president over at Federal Hall. In 1792, the NYSE was formed to transform NYC into the major financial capital it is today. In 1817, the Staten Island Ferry began its service to get passengers to Staten Island from Manhattan. In the 1820's the area once again expanded, but this time around the East River giving way for South St Seaport as it became built with warehouses and was a major fishing port. In 1868, the el was built to allow for transportation further up the island. In 1886, the Statue of Liberty was built over on what was then called Bethodos Island. At the same time, the Potter Bldg was errected over at Park Row as NYC's first skyscraper. However, NYC didn't really start getting on top of the NY World Bldg was errected in 1890. Withing a few years, the Manhattan Life Ins Bldg got built to surpass it did the Singer Bldg in 1908 only to be surpassed by the Metropolitain Life Ins Bldg a year later. In 1909, the PANYNJ decided to build a rapid transit system that would connect to NJ known as the Hudson & Manhattan RR, which is today know as PATH. In 1920, a Russian terrorist group set off a bomb in front of a crowd at 23 Wall St, but were never caught. In 1929, the area got back the WTB when 40 Wall St was built to surpass the Woolworth Bldg, but it wound up being surpassed within a year by the Chysler Bldg. In 1946, a military plane accidently hit 40 Wall St just like the one that hit the ESB. In the 1950's, the els were torn as they became obsolete to the subways. In 1960's, it was decided, that the PANYNJ decided to construct a new complex over Radio Row and their office in the Hudson Terminal Bldgs know as the WTC as they were completed and give the FiDi the WTB once again in 1970 with the North Tower completed until the Sears Tower was built in 1974. Unfortunately, a reccession was occuring at the time causing businesses to start leaving the area. In 1993, Al Qadea caused a bombing in 1993 at the WTC basement injuring six, and then actually destroying them with planes in 2001 killing nearly 3,000 people. There has been work on recovery for the area, though commercial developement has been declining in the area since the 1990's leading to mainly residential construction from that point on. The Financial Dist still serves as one of NYC top business centers, though it has lost that to midtown Manhattan since the postwar era. You can get here by taking the subway to South Ferry (1), Bowling Green (4, 5), Whitehall St-South Ferry (R, W), Wall St-William St (2, 3), Broad St (J, M, Z), Wall St-Broadway (4, 5), Rector St-Trinity Pl (R, W), Cortland St-Church St (1), Cortland St-WTC (E), Fulton St (J, M, Z, 4, 5), Brodway-Nassau St (A, C), Chambers St-West Broadway (1, 2, 3), and Chambers St-Church St (A, C) along with taking the PATH to the WTC station. Here is what you will find in the FiDi.
