Heading east brings us into the hood known as TriBeCa. It goes Chambers to Canal Sts between Broadway and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally the land was pretty much farmland when it was first settled. In the 1840's, the area became industrialized with factories. Around the 1870's, the els connected it with both upper and lower Manhattan in that it made transporation faster. Around 1900, came the Washington Market as the area became dubbed the LWS to go with the LES on the East River, though some parts were lost in the 1920's when the West Side Elevated Hwy (NY 9A) was built In 1927, the Holland Tunnel was built to allow for auto and commercial traffic to NJ. As the 6th Ave Subway became completed in 1940, it made the 6th Ave El obsolete and was slated for demolition, though the 9th Ave El would stay for about another decade before seeing its demise. In the 1960's and 1970's, much of the former warehouses were rennovated into lofts as some older buildings were demolished to make way for newer construction. The area got renamed as TriBeCa for being the Triangle Below Canal St by realtors, which it stuck to. These days TriBeCa is known for its famous film festival that is held annually as well as the BMCC that is here. Art is another popular thing that is known here as well. You can get here by taking the subway to Chambers St-Broadway (1, 2, 3), Franklin St (1), Canal St-Varick St (1), Chambers St-WTC (A, C), Canal St-Holland Tunnel (A, C, E), and Canal St-Broadway (J, M, N, Q, R, W, Z, 6).
