Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Chinatown

Heading east brings us into the hood known as Chinatown. It goes from Canal St to the East River with St James Pl between Broadway and the Bowery with Pike St. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly a forest until the 1800's when Collect Pond was filled in as was the canal hence the name Canal St. The area was became filled with Irish immigrants after the Irish Potato Famine of 1844. In the 1860's, came the 2nd and 3rd Ave Els to allow for transportation both downtown as well as further up through Manhattan. In 1872, Wo Kee moved here from China to set up a general store that started an influx of Chineese. Unfortunately, the Chineese Exclusion Act of 1882 made it hard for them to live anywhere else. In 1909, the Manhattan Br was built to allow for connections to Brooklyn. In 1934, the Knickerbocker Village was built as the very first housing project for NYC as the nearby Alfread E Smith and Fiorello LaGuardia Houses, which were named after those mayors, followed with them. In the 1943, the Chineese Exclusion Act was finally repealed allowing for them to move elsewhere, though many of them liked where they were, so they just expanded in the immediate surroundings. In the 1950's, the els saw demolition as they became obsolete to the subways. Chinatown today still has a number of businesses that remain Chineese as they were then, though there are now two other Chinatowns with one in Brooklyn and in Queens. You can get here by taking the subway to Canal St-Centre St (J, M, N, Q, R, W, Z, 6). Here is what you will find in Chinatown.
