Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-SoHo

Heading west brings us into the hood known as SoHo. It goes from Canal to Houston Sts between Lafayette St and the Hudson River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was pretty much farmland when the Dutch first settled it back in 1625 known as Lispenard's Meadows. It wasn't until 1775, when the area was settled as it became a country retreated from the city. The meadow was filled in since 1767 along with Collect Pond. The early 1800's brought a big boom as the area was being absorbed into NYC with the contruction of Hotels and theaters, elegant stores, stately mansions, minstrel halls, gambling casinos, and brothels mostly along Broadway. Durring the 1840, came the construction of castirons, which was the architecture of the place. In 1868, it became connected to to the tip of Manhattan as well as further upward on the island when the 6th and 9th Ave Els were being constructed. The 1870's and 1880's brought the area to a number of factories as textiles moved there. In 1927, the Holland Tunnel was completed to bring vehicular traffic to NJ. In 1939, demolition came to the 6th Ave El, though the 9th Ave El managed to stay until 1958. There was a threat by Robert Moses to tear down half of the neighborhood with a highway known as the LOMEX, but it was stopped. Realtors decided to give the place a name and called it SoHo for being South of Houston St, though has nothing to do with the one in London. In 1973, many of the castirons that were converted into lofts became known as the SoHo Castiron Dist as it was landmarked. SoHo still remains a prestigous neighborhood in NYC with its architecture along with its cobbleston streets that still remain there. However, the part that is west of landmarked district has been getting new buildings. Nevertheless, the NYC Fire Museum is located here. You can get here by taking the subway to Canal St-Varick St (1), Canal St-Holland Tunnel (A, C, E), Canal St-Broadway (N, J, M, N, Q, R, W, Z, 6), Prince St (N, R, W), Spring St-Lafayette St (6), Broadway-Lafayette St (B, D, F, V), Spring St-6th Ave (C, E), and Houston St (1). Here is what you will find in SoHo.
