Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Greenwich Village

Heading east brings us into the hood known as Greenwich Village. It goes from Houston to 14th Sts between 6th Ave and Broadway. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was a marsh home to the Canarsie Indians who called it Sapokanikan until the Dutch came in the 1630's and renamed it Noortwyck, but it was mainly for farms. In 1664, the English captured the colony and took over the farms. In 1713, the area was chartered as a village and was known as Greenwich Village due to its poximity to the Hudson River for commercial activity. Durring the American Revolution, George Washington placed one of his headquarters at what's now 2 5th Ave. Unfortunately, a series of of epidemics including one with yellow fever hit here between 1803 and 1822. In 1836, NYU opened up its campus for the first time as it spurnned developement. In 1870, the 6th Ave El was built to allow for transportation to both downtown Manhattan and further up the island. In 1871, a potters field was converted into Washing Sq as a major park for the area. In 1908, the Hudson & Manhattan RR built its rails that would connect it to NJ. In 1911, the Triangle Shirt Waste Factory had an explosion that had killed many of the immigrant workers there, though the Brown Bldg was rebuilt shortly after with a plaque dedicated to it. In 1916, Greenwich Village became a center bohemians. In 1939, the 6th Ave El was demolished as the subway took its route. Durring the 1950's, Washington Sq was remade to no longer have a traffic circle as Jane Jacobs celebrated with John Lindsy the burnning of the last car to go through the park. Anti-war protests became common in Greenwich Village with many filling Washington Sq for their protests against the Vietnam War. Around that time, Bohemian culture hit again here, but this one didn't last long as gentrfication made it more difficult for them to live here. Although the main area is landmarked, the rest isn't and that includes places where NYU tends to built more buildings for their campus such as the one they placed over a cottage that was used by Edgar Allan Poe. Nevertheless, Washington Mews contains the buildings that were once stables, while the Forbes Gallery is known as for its collection of art. You can get here by taking the subway to W 4th St-Washington Sq (A, B, C, D, E, F, V), 14th St-6th Ave (F, L, V, 1, 2, 3), and 8th St-NYU (N, R, W), and 14th St-Union Sq (L, N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, 6) as well as the PATH to 9th/14th Sts. Here is what you will find in Greenwich Village.
