| Heading east brings us into the hood known as NoHo. It goes from Houston St to Astor Pl between Broadway/Bowery. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was marshland that belonged to the Canarsie Indians, who referred to it as the Sapokanikan. In the 1630's the Dutch had the land and used it mainly for farming as they called it Noortwyck. In 1664, the English took it over and occupied the farms. In 1713, it became part of the hamlet known as Greenwich Village. In 1748, Jacob Sperry, a Swiss physician, had established a botanical garden. In 1804, John Jacob Astor bought the gardens and transformed it to be a major social gathering with the help of Delacroix and renamed it Vauxhall Garden. Mansions had sprung up in the early 1800's such as La Grange Terrace, but local stonemasons were not happy that it was built by prisoners from Sing-Sing Prison rather than hiring them. Unfortunately, prices rose in 1825, making it hard for small business to stay here. In 1849, there was the Astor Riot, and others that followed in 1863 in response to the US Civil War along with a speach from Abrham Lincoln at Cooper Sq. The second half the 1800's brought a number of immigrants who had worked in the factories and gasworks hence the name Gasoline Alley. In the 1980's, the area was landmarked and was given the name NoHo for being North of Houston St. Many new developement has occurred here within the last few years and caused some longtime businesses like CBGB's to finally sell after being around for some time. The Public Theater has been doing plays since 1833. Another site known to NoHo is the Merchants House Museum, which doesn't get mentioned a lot. You can get here by taking the subway to Broadway-Lafayette St (B, D, F, V), Bleecker St (6), 8th St-NYU (N, R, W), and Astor Pl (6). Here is what you will find in NoHo. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

| I usually refer to this place as NoNo as in "Not Noticed" b/c it's usually associated with the East Village rather than by itself.
