| Heading east brings us into the hood known as the East Village. It goes from Houston to 14th Sts between the Bowery, with 4th Ave, Astor Pl, and Broadway, and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly farmland when it was first settled. Peter Stuyvesant had his farm here, which he retired to after being done with politics in 1667 until he died in 1672 and got burried in it. Unfortunately, his mansion burnned down in 1778 and his great grandson sold it to the Episcopal Church, who built St Mark's-in-the-Bowery on that site and kept Stuyvesant's grave there. In 1783, George Washington came over to the Bull's Head Tavern to refresh himself before moving his troops along the waterfront against the British soldiers durring the American Revolution. By 1800, the Bowery became an elegant road with prosperous shops and mansions aligning it, especially with John Jacob Astor living on what's now Astor Pl. In the 1840's, a number of German immigrants came to reside here giving the nickname either Little Germany or even Kleindeutschland, but that ended after the 1880's. In 1849, there were the riots against the Irish Potato Famine by Irish immigrants. In 1859, Cooper Union was founded and built, and was known for a speach given by Abe Lincoln on slavery a year later. The late 1870's brought the 2nd and 3rd Ave Els to connect it with the rest of Manhattan in allowing for faster transit. In 1904, a memorial was placed in Tompkins Sq to remember the victims of the General Slocum. The Great Depression caused a number of millionaires to leave the area, making it affordable to newer immigrants and working class Americans. In 1942, the els were deemed obsolete and demolished. Housing projects took over many of the blocks in what became known as Alphabet City. In the postwar era, a number of PRs moved there as it became nicknamed Loisaida. In the 1960's, the area became dissassociated with the LES to become its own neighborhood known as the East Village. Punk rockers and bohemians found homes in many of the apartements and had performed at the now defunct CBGBs. More recently, NYU has been building a lot of its new dorms in the East Village causing for historic places to be demolished such as churches. A Broadway play known as Rent portrays the nature of the East Village, while Stomp, and off-Broadway play, performs at the Orpheum Theater. There are currently other ethnicities here such as Little India and Little Ukraine along with other groups around there world here. You can get here by taking the subway to LES-2nd Ave (F, V), Astor Pl (6), 8th St-NYU (N, R, W), 14th St-Union Sq (L, N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, 6), 3rd Ave (L), and 1st Ave (L). Here is what you will find in the East Village. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
