Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Flatiron

Heading west brings us into the hood known as Flatiron. It goes from 14th to 30th Sts between 5/6th Aves, with Broadway. This hood is both commercial and residential. Originally, this land was mainly a swamp until it was used by the Dutch for farming. In 1849, General William Jenkins Worth, who served in the Mexican War, was burried here when it was still open land. It wasn't until the mid 1800's that developement came when industrialization came to the area in what's now castiron lofts. In the 1870's, the 6th Ave El was built to give transportation throughout Manhattan. In 1902, the Flatiron Bldg was errected in an attempt to create a commercial block that would rival with Wall St by George Fuller, but it failed. However, it was seen as the first skyscraper built outside of lower Manhattan as a movement to go north. Around this time, other buildings such as the Intl Toy Ctr was errected along with many photo stores had located here giving it the name the Photo Dist. In 1939, the 6th Ave saw demolition as the subway line running right beneath would replace it. The LPC had designated the Flatiron Bldg a landmark due to its unique architecture and even dubbed much of the area around it as the Flatiron Dist. The strecth of the two avenues takes the name Ladies Mile in the name that there were numerous department stores that were for women. You can get here by taking the subway to 14th St-Union Sq (L, N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, 6), 14th St-6th Ave (F, L, V), 23rd St-6th Ave (F, V), 23rd St-Broadway (N, R, W), and 28th St (R, W) as well as taking the PATH to 14th/23rd Sts. Here is what you will find in Flatiron.
