| Heading west brings us into the hood known as Chelsea. It goes from 14th to 30th Sts between 6th Ave and the Hudson River. This hood is both residential/commercial. Originally, it was home Benjamin Moore and his family, who owned a farm here, and had their manor named Chelsea after the town in London. In 1827, the Clement Clarke Moore gave part of his property to the Episcopal General Theological Seminary, and they took more later on. In 1847, the Hudson River RR made its tracks by the Hudson, which began to change Chelsea by loosing its ruralness. In the 1870's, the 6th/9th Ave Els were built to allow for transportation throughout Manhattan. Despite this, it was ruled a red light district after mafia known as the Tenderlions who had repeatly raided the bordellos of Anthony Comstock and his vice squad. Around 1900, Chelsea recieved a number of Irish immigrants as it industrialized. In 1908, the Hudson & Manhattan RR opened rail service from NJ to go all the way to Hearld Sq. In 1930, came the errection of London Terr, which was the world's largest apartment block at the time. At the same time came the High Line, which was used for the transport of frieght. In 1936, the 6th Ave El saw demolition as it became obsolete, while the 9th Ave El managed to stay until the 1950's. Durring the Cold War, Chelsea became a popular spot for hipsters and artists. It's more recent residents happen to be homosexuals, but it hasn't made anyone think less about it. After SoHo, Chelsea comes next in being known for its art galleries. The Meatpacking Dist, which is currently in danger of being lost, contains a lot of warehouses that were once there. There are some current talks about making the High Line into an eleveated park. You can get here by taking the subway to 14th St-8th Ave (A, C, E, L), 14th St-6th Ave (F, L, V, 1, 2, 3), 18th St (1), 23rd St-8th Ave (C, E), 23rd St-7th Ave (1), 23rd St-6th Ave (F, V), and 28th St-7th Ave (1) as well as the PATH to 14th/23rd Sts. Here is what you will find in Chelsea. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
