Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Midtown South

Heading north brings us into the hood known as Midtown South. It goes from 30th to 42nd Sts between 5th Ave and the Hudson River. This hood is mostly commercial. Originally, it was mostly forset until it was made into farming. George Washington was known for bring his troops through when retreating from the British Army in the late 1770's. Durring the 1820's, industry was built mainly for clothing for slaves hence being known as garments. In 1842, the Croton Reservoir was errected to provide drinking water before plumming was made for those living there. In 1853, a world's fair was held with the Crystal Palace as the centerpiece, but it mysteriously burnned down five years later. In 1856, the Hudson River RR was built to allow for transportation to upstate NY. In 1863, Reservoir Sq (now Bryant Pk) was used as a site for draft riots on those who didn't want to serve the US Civil War. In the late 1870's the 6th/9th Ave Els allowed for transportation throughout Manhattan. In 1895, the NYPL was built on the former reservoir, which was declared obsolete when when a new one was built in The Bronx at a much deeper level. Around this time, came the complex known as Herald Sq, which was known for having the headquarters of NY Tribune. In 1908, the Hudson & Manhattan RR was built to go to through here to NJ. In 1910, Pensylvannia RR decided to place a stop here as part of their monopoly as well as extending the LIRR to Manhattan. In 1931, the area saw itself at the top of the world when the ESB was errected to surpass the Chysler Bldg, and held its title as the WTB until 1 WTC was built in 1970. In 1936, the 6th Ave El was demolished to make way for a subway line going under it. In 1945, the Lincoln Tunnel was opened to allow for vehicular access to NJ. In 1958, the 9th Ave El suffered the same fate as the 6th Ave El did. In 1965, there were protests on wanting to save the stationhouse for Penn Station, but failed especially when the LPC was formed too late and the current MSG (IV) was built for the new site of the NY Knickerbockers, Rangers, and later on the Liberty when they formed in 1997. Even though fans were happy over at MSG when the Knicks won both the 1970 and 1973 NBA Finals those years, many were still mad at the fact that they lost an important structure to this. In 1979, NJ Transit built a line over to Penn Station to give an alterantive to PATH when going to NJ by train. Midtown South is home to a block known as Koreatown, though a larger one can be over in the Flushing section of Queens along with some areas such as the Garment Dist. The Hudson Yds has still been a controversial site ever since it became the idea of expanding the Jacob K Javits Convention Ctr along with the NY Jets. You can get here by taking the subway to 34th St/Penn Station-8th Ave (A, C, E), 34th St/Penn Station-7th Ave (1, 2, 3), 34th St-Herald Sq (B, D, F, N, Q, R, W, V), 42nd St-PABT (A, C, E), 42nd St-Times Sq (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7), and 42nd St-Bryant Pk (B, D, F, V, 7), the PATH to 33rd St, and NJ Transit and LIRR to Penn Station, which also serves Amtrak. Here is what you will find in Midtown South.
