| Heading east brings us into the hood known as Murray Hill. It goes from 23rd to 42nd Sts, with 41st St and 2nd Ave, between 5th Ave and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly marsh until it was discovered by Jacobus Kips durring the 1600's in which the bay at the time was named Kips Bay in honor of him until it was reclaimed. In 1762, Robert Murray came over from North Carolina to rent land from the city to have his farm and his estate until Lindley Murray, his oldest son was forced into an exile in 1783 for being a loyalist to the British durring the American Revolution. In 1776, George Washington was invited to the estate for tea with his army in an attempt to delay his battle stratagey. In 1834, the NY & Harlem RR made its tracks for transportation all the way to the northern part of the island. Durring the mid 1800's, JP Morgan had his mansion here, which is now the JP Morgan Library. In 1871, the NY & Harlem RR replaced it lower part below with streetcars as steam locomotives were banned below 42nd St and moved its headquarters into Grand Central Depot. In the late 1870's, the 2nd/3rd Ave Els were errected to allow for transportation throughout Manhattan. In 1879, the very first MSG was built near Madison Sq for the original NY Knickerbockers, a baseball team, as a newer one came in 1890 until it was moved further uptown in 1925 and the NY Life Ins Bldg replaced it. In 1909, Murray Hill saw itself on the top of the world when the Met Life Ins Bldg was built as the WTB to surpass the Singer Bldg until it was surpassed by the Woolworth Bldg in 1913. In 1935, the Murray Hill Tunnel was abandoned for trains and repaved with concrete. In 1940, the Queens Midtown Tunnel was built to allow for vehicular access to Queens. In the 1950's, the els saw demolition as they became obsolete. A huge construction boom came durring the postwar with places such as Waterside Plaza. Murray Hill is known for the active courthouse that is outside the Civic Ctr with the NYS Appelleate Courthouse. Some like to refer Murray Hill as Curry Hill for the fact that it has a number of Indian resturuants. You can get here by taking the subway to 23rd St-Broadway (N, R, W), 23rd St-Lexington Ave (6), 28th St-Lexington Ave (6), 42nd St-Bryant Pk (B, D, F, V, 7), and 42nd St-GCT (S, 4, 5, 6, 7). Here is what you will find in Murray Hill. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
