| Heading north brings us into the hood known as Turtle Bay. It goes from 42nd to 53rd Sts, with 43rd St and 2nd Ave, between 3rd Ave and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was a creek that was known for having turtles until the Dutch Colonial governor gave the land to two Englishmen in 1639 making it known as Turtle Bay Farm. In 1811, the area lost a lot of its hills when the Commisioners Plan created the street grid of Manhattan. In 1863, an army enrollment office was burnned down by a mob who refused to fight in the US Civil War. In the late 1870's, the 2nd/3rd Ave Els were built to allow for transportation throughout Manhattan. At the same time, a number of immigrants came to live here, which caused for the construction of brownstones and apartments. In 1952, the UN had its hedquarters built over what was originally slaughterhouses along with the rest of its complex. In the late 1950's, both els were demolished due to being obsolete to the subways. The most recent decades had brough a lot of new buildings to Turtle Bay. The UN is actually considered international territory and even gets their own zip code. Not too far is the Japan Society allowing for known what their culture is like. You can get here by taking the M15, M27, M42, M50, M98, M101, M102, M103, and M104 buses. Here is what you will find in Turtle Bay. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
