Heading north brings us into the hood known as Sutton Pl. It goes from 53rd to 59th Sts between 3rd Ave and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly marshland until it was given to Englishmen by the Dutch colonial governor in 1639 to be reclaimed. Durring the 1700's, the Sylvan Summerhouse Retreat was built as resort, which was mainly used for escaping the city due to diphtheria. The area was industrialized durring the early 1800's when several factories were built. In the 1850's, the area had rowhouses built for housing especially with riverhouses in 1878. Around this time, the 2nd Ave El was built to allow for transportation throughout Manhattan. In 1909, the Queenboro Br was built to allow for vehicular access to Queens. In the early 1900's, bohemians came to live here from finding refuge. In the 1920's, townhouses were built for WWI veterans when comming home from the war. In the 1950's, the 2nd Ave El was demolished due to being obsolete to the subway. The postwar brought a lot of new buildings here, though most not so big. You can get here by taking the M15, M31, M57, M98, M101, M102, M103, Q32, Q60, and Q101 buses. Here is what you will find in Sutton Pl.
