Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Midtown

Heading west brings us into the hood known as Midtown. It goes from 42nd to 59th Sts between 8th/3rd Aves. This hood is both commercial and residential. Originally, the land was mostly forest until John Morin Scott took the land for his farm in the mid 1700's. Although he lost his estate and farm to the British durring the American Revolution, he got it back when it was over in 1783 for helping George Washington. Durring the early 1800's, this area started to have a number of houses making it feel village-like. In 1831, the NY & Harlem RR was built to provide for transit along the east side. In the 1850's, the patraiarchs of St Patrick's Cathedral felt that they needed more space for their church and couldn't do it downtown, so they moved up to get that over placing a cemetery. In 1863, draft riots were made in protest on those who didn't want to fight in the US Civil War causing many wooden houses to be burnned down. In 1871, Grand Central Depot was built as a new center for that rail line. In the late 1870's, the 3rd/6th Ave Els were built to allow for additional transportation throughout Manahttan as it became known as Longacre Sq, which also had many horse carriages there as well. In 1904, Adolph S Ochs decided to find a new headquarters for the NY Times and located here being known as Times Sq, and celebrated by being known for having the ball dropping on New Years Eve after it opened. The area saw a number of theaters being built at the time. In 1930, the Chyrsler Bldg was built to the be the WTB after surpassing the 40 Wall St, but only had its title for a few months when the ESB was built nearly double the height. Despite the Great Depression, it didn't stop the errection of skyscrapers and complexes such as the Rockefeller Ctr in 1939, which some thought that John D Rockefeller was crazy do built it durring that time. In 1940, the 6th Ave El was demolished as it became obsolete to the subway, while the 3rd Ave El suffered a similar fate a decade later. The construction boom continued in the postwar era with many new buildings rising even today. While one can see famous Broadway plays in the Theater Dist, the Diamond Dist offers choices in jewlry such as Cartier's and Tiffany's. Midtown is known for being one of the largest bussiness districts in the world. You can get here by taking the subway to 42nd St-PABT (A, C, E), Times Sq-42nd St (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7), 42nd St-Bryant Pk (B, D, F, V, 7), 42nd St-GCT (S, 4, 5, 6, 7), 47-50th Sts-Rockefeller Ctr (B, D, F, V), 49th St (N, R, W), 50th St-8th Ave (C, E), 50th St-7th Ave (1), 7th Ave-53rd St (B, D, E), 5th Ave-53rd St (E, V), 51st St (6), Lextington Ave-53rd St (E, V), 59th St-Columbs Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), 57th St-7th Ave (N, Q, R, W), 57th-6th Ave (F), 5th Ave-59th St (N, R, W), and 59th St-Lexington Ave (N, R, W, 4, 5, 6) as well as taking all lines of Metro North RR to GCT. Here is what you will find in Midtown.
