Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Lincoln Square

Heading north brings us into the hood known as Lincoln Sq. It goes from 59th to 72nd Sts between 8th Ave (CPW) and the Hudson River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was settled by the Dutch who made it part of the Bloomingdale Dist as it was mainly for farming. It wasn't until 1851, when the Hudson River RR had it tracks running through here. In 1864, a flock of sheep was placed in what's now Tavern on the Green. In 1870, a carousel was built in the newly founded Central Pk. In the late 1870's, came the 9th Ave El to allow for an alternative as did the B&O RR when it came in the late 1800's. Many blacks had lived here as the area took on the name known as San Juan Hill, after the battle that occurred in Cuba durring the Spanish American War. In 1910, Julliard was moved to be a college mostly for up and comming musicians and keep them in the US. In the 1930's, the sheep could no longer be in Central Pk and they were relocated to Prospect Pk for the time being. In the 1940's, the 9th Ave El was demolished after being obsolete. In the 1960's, the Lincoln Ctr for Performing Arts was built after using eminent domain to take over a number of blocks. In 1987, Donald Trump had the idea to build a skyscraper for NBC known as TV City, but it was cancelled, and he built Trump Pl as his consolation prize, which consisted of a complex of luxury apartments. Lincoln Sq has became a cultural part of NYC especially with the Metropolitian Opera House as the centerpiece. Just near it is the Church of Latter Day Saints, which is one of the few in the state of NY. Tavern on the Green is one of the most known resturuants and can be found in nearby Central Pk. You can get here by taking the subway to 59th St-Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), 66th St-Lincoln Ctr (1), 72nd St-Broadway (1, 2, 3), and 72nd St-CPW (B, C). Here is what you will find in Lincoln Sq.
