Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Lenox Hill

Heading east brings us into the hood known as Lenox Hill. It goes from 59th to 77th Sts between 5th Ave and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was mostly farmland when Robert Lenox settled in the 1770's when comming from Scotland. However, he had problems for being a loyalist durring the American Revolution, but he managed to keep his farm until his death in 1840. In 1796, William Stephen Smith and his wife Abigal purchased land to build a lodge known as the Mt Vernon Hotel for travelers and those who wanted to get away from the city that day. In 1834, came the NY&Harlem RR, which connected to both ends of Manhattan. In 1857, the German Dispensary (now Lenox Hill Hospital) had located here. Durring the 1860's, the Central Pk Zoo was placed for people to see animals there. In 1870, a dairy center, which is now a visitors center, was built to provide for milk services for NYC. In the 1870's, the 2nd/3rd Ave Els were built to allow for additional transportation. In 1898, a conservatory was built over in Central Pk to house a number of plants that weren't common to the area, but it was demolished in 1937 and turnned into a garden. In 1909, the Queensboro Br was built to allow for vehicular access to Queens. Durring the Great Depression, there were homeless people living in shacks that they created by the zoo until they were taken down later on. In 1939, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Ctr decided to locate here as did Hunter College in 1943. In 1955, the els saw demolition due to being obsolete to the subway. In 1976, the Roosevelt Island Tramway was built to allow for getting to Roosevelt w/o having to drive or take the bus. Lenox Hill does act very much as a trendy area along with having some colleges. The Wollman Rink is very much known durring the winter as skaters can also enjoy a view of Manhattan while skating there. You can get here by taking the subway to 59th-Lexington Ave (N, R, W, 4, 5, 6), 5th Ave-59th St (N, R, W), Lexington Ave-63rd St (F), 68th St-Hunter College (6), and 77th St (6). Here is what you will find in Lenox Hill.
