Heading west brings us into the hood know as the UES. It goes from 77th to 86th Sts between 5th Ave (Museum Mile) to the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was mostly farmland for the early part. In 1834, the NY & Harlem RR was extended to allow for transporation throughout the east side of Manhattan. However, most developement didn't really come until the 1870's when the 2nd/3rd Ave Els were built. Country villas were built along what's now 5th Ave durring the late 1800's. Nothing has changed except for more apartments/townhouses being built and the els being torn down in 1955 for being obsolete to the subway. The Metropolitan Museum sits right accross on 5th Ave with Cleopatra's Needle being right near it. You can get here by taking the subway 77th St (6) and 86th St-Lexington Ave (4, 5, 6).
