Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Yorkville

Heading north bring us into the hood known as Yorkville. It goes from 86th to 96th Sts between 3rd Ave and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly farmland when the Dutch settled it. Durring the American Revolution, Geroge Washington had used Belvue Mansion to commandeer a strategy against the British, but it was destroyed by them. In 1799, Archibald Gracie built a newer mansion to replace it and called it Gracie Mansion. In the 1870's, came the 2nd Ave El, which brough a number of European immigrants here, mainly German. In 1904, the crash of the General Slocum brought even more Germans to live here. Durring the time of Prohibition, the Ruppert Brewery became a known speakeasy for those trying to defy the law, and it managed to live long after it until its demolition for the Ruppert Towers that now stand there today. WWII did bring problems to Yorkville as some thought that anyone who was German could possibily work for the Nazis. In 1942, Robert Moses had convinced Mayor Fiorello La Guardia to have Gracie Mansion has the new residence for NYC mayors, which he agreed to it. In 1955, the 2nd Ave El saw demolition due to being obsolete to the subway. In the 1957, came the very first Von Stuben Parade to celebrate the Germans living in Yorkville. Although Yorkville, is predominately German, there are other central Europeans living here as well. You can get here by taking the M15, M31, M86, M96, M98, M101, M102, and M103 buses. Here is what you will find in Yorkville.
