| Heading west bring us into the hood known as the UWS. It goes from 72nd to 96th Sts between 8th Ave (CPW) and the Hudson River. Originally, it was settled by the Dutch who called it Strycker's Bay and made it part of the Bloomingdale Dist. In 1764, Charles Anthrop had his mansion built, and it's remembered today by the apartments that were built over it bearing its name. In the first half of the 1800's, many suburban villas were built aligning on Bloomingdale Rd (now Broadway). In the 1820's, a group of blacks formed a community known as Seneca Village, which is now part of Central Pk. In the 1830's, the Hudson River RR had its tracks go along the Hudson River for transportation throughout Manhattan and to upstate NY. In 1843, Edgar Allen Poe lived here for a year at a cottage at what's now 84th St, which is known for being called Edgar Allen Poe Pl. In the 1870's, the 9th Ave El was built to provide for additional transit as townhouses and luxury apartments were built such as the the Dakota, which was the first one built. The early 1900's gave the area some statues such as Joan of Arc and placed an some specail alleys with estates such as Pommander Walk. The founding of Riverside Dr, which follows Riverside Pk, had a number of luxury apartments contructed there in the 1930's for offering views of the park and of NJ. In the 1950's, the 9th Ave El saw demolition as it was declared obsolete to the subway. The UWS saw a lot of gays moving in since the postwar era. In 1965, the Delecorte Theater was built near the Belvedere Castle, built in the 1860's, for having plays in Central Pk such as Shakesphere in the Park. There are number of known museums here such as the American Museum of Natural History, Children's Museum of Manhattan, and NY Historical Society. You can get here by taking the subway 72nd St-Broadway (1, 2, 3), 72nd St-CPW (B, C), 79th St-Broadway (1), 81st-Museum of Natural History (B, C), 86th St-Broadway (1), 86th St-CPW (B, C), 96th St-Broadway (1, 2, 3), and 96th St-CPW (B, C).
