Heading north brings us into the hood known as Manhattan Valley. It goes from 96th to 110th (Cathedral Pkwy) Sts between 8th Ave (CPW) to the Hudson River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was settled by the Dutch in the 1700's, who named as Bloomingdale Village as part of the Bloomingdale Dist. Durring the War of 1812, the were several forts placed in what's now the NW corner of Central Pk that included Ft Clinton, Ft Fish, McGown's Pass, Nutter's Battery, and Blockhouse No 1. In the 1830's, the Hudson River RR had its tracks built along the Hudson River to allow for transportation throughout Manhattan and as upstate NY. In 1870, additional transit was added by the 9th Ave El. The 1930's, brought a number of Irish and German immigrants to live here. In the 1950's, came immigrants from
PR, and thought caused problems with the area with the white flight to the suburbs. Robert Moses thought he could help revive Manhattan Valley by having the Frederick Douglass Houses. Unfortunately, the number of crack dealers prevented it from being a livable community, especially when it rose in the 1980's. Manhattan Valley has managed to recover from it, though it's still relatively cheap than most Manhattan neighborhoods. You can get here by taking the subway to 96th St-Broadway (1, 2, 3), 96th St-CPW (B, C), 103rd St-Broadway (1), 103rd St-CPW (B, C), 110th St-Broadway (1), and 110th St-CPW (B, C). Here is what you will find in Manhattan Valley.
