| Heading west brings us into the hood known as Morningside Hts. It goes from 110th (Cathedral Pkwy) to 125th (Dr Martin Luther King, Jr Blvd) Sts between 8th Ave (Frederick Douglass Blvd), with St Nicholas Ave, and the Hudson River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was first settled by Harmon Vandewater, who gave it the name Vandewater Hts in the 1600's. It was later on made as part of the Bloomingdale Dist as Bloomingdale Village. In 1776, George Washington lost the Battle of Harlem Hts against the British, and was forced to flee. In 1797, St Clair Pollock fell of a cliff into the river when he was five causing the Pollock family to make here grave there and tell anyone who wanted to buy their property to leave it there. In the first half of the 1800's, it was stuck with the Bloomingdale Assuylum, which sits where Columbia University is now. In the 1830's, the NY & Hudson RR was built to allow for transportation all the way to upstate NY. In 1842, came the Croton Resiviour to provide for drinking water for NYC and the surrounding area until a new one much deeper replaced it in 1885. In 1867, the area was renamed to to Morningside Hts after Morningside Pk. In the 1870's, came the 9th Ave El for additional transit. In 1885, former US president and Union general Ulysses S Grant was entombed (not burried) in a special masoleum overlooking the Hudson River. In 1897, Columbia University had replaced the assuylum to help build a bigger campus. The 1930's and 1940's spelled the end for the streetcars on 125th St as they were being phased out. In the 1950's, the 9th Ave El was demolished due to being obsolete. Columbia University became a center for protests against the Vietnam War in the 1960's and 1970's that was lead mainly by the students as police used to teargas to stop them. Morningside Hts did manage to get better over its years. Famous places include the unfinished Cathedral of St John the Divine and Riverside Church. Columbia University is one of most presitgous colleges in the US. For Seinfeld fans, Tom's Resturaunt, used as Monk's in the show, is a must for all fans. Another popular resturaunt is the Terrace Resturaunt, which offers views of the area. You can get here by taking the subway to 110th St (Cathedral Pkwy)-Broadway (1), 110th St (Cathedral Pkwy)-CPW (B, C), 116th St-Columbia University (1), 116th St-8th Ave (B, C), 125th St-Broadway (1), and 125th St-St Nicholas Ave (A, B, C, D). Here is what you will find in Morningside Hts. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
