| Heading north brings us into the hood known as Manhattanville. It goes from 125th (Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd) to 135th Sts between St Nicholas Ave and the Hudson River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was settled by the Dutch who called it Moertje David's Vly, meaning Mother David's Valley. When the English took over the colony in 1664, they renamed it Harlem Cove. In 1776, the valleys were used as passages for the American soldiers durring the American Revolution in the Battle of Harlem Hts, but they lost to the British. In 1806, a village was established known as Manhattan Village, but many just knew it as Manhattanville, as the streets were laid out by Jacob Schieffelin and other wealthy merchants, mostly Quakers. Durring the War of 1812, forts were built along the valley to protect from British fleets. In the 1830's, came the NY & Hudson RR to provide for transportation to upstate NY. In 1847, Manhattanville College located here after moving from the LES until it moved again to Purchase in 1952. In the 1870's, additional transit came with the 9th Ave El. Much of the redevelopement really came in 1904 after the subway came, especially with a viaduct that was built for the 125th St Station due to the foundation of the area. In 1906, CCNY moved it campus here where it continues to be today. In the 1950's, the 9th Ave El was demolished in being obsolete to the subway. The postwar brought a lot of immigrants comming from Latin America, mainly from PR, DR, and Cuba. In the 1970's, many students came to live here that were attending classes at either Columbia University or Barnard College due to the low rents and affordable housing. Although Manhattanville did suffer problems, it managed to bounce back. More recently, residents and workers are fighting the possible expansion of Columbia University in that it will involve them to loose their property through emminent domain abuse and will cause huge gentrification. Some refer to it more as West Harlem or as the Viva Dist. You can get here by taking the subway to 125th St-Broadway (1), 125th St-St Nicholas Ave (B, C), and 135th St-St Nicholas Ave (B, C). Here is what you will find in Manahttanville. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
