Default NYC:Manhattan hoods-Washington Heights

Heading north brings us into the hood known as Washington Hts. It goes from 155th St (Audobon Terr) to Fairview Ave, with 190th/193rd Sts, between the Harlem/Hudson Rivers, with the Harlem River Dr. Originally, it was mostly farmland and open forest before it was settled. In 1765, Roger Morris had his estate built and what's now 165th St and Edegecomb Ave. In 1776, the Continental Army, lead by Geroge Washington, lost the Battle of Ft Washington to the British and used that mansion as a base for planning it. In the 1830's, the NY & Hudson RR was built to allow for transportation to upstate NY as well as further down the island. In 1842, the Croton Reservoir was built to allow for drinking water and had the Highbridge, built in 1848, as its aqueduct along with a watchtower, and made the reservoir deeper in 1890 when the original was declared obsolete. In 1888, the Washington bridge was built for connection to The Bronx first as a pedestrian brige and later on as a road bridge. In 1895, the Ft George Amusement Pk was built to give rides with a rollercoaster until it burnned down in 1914. In 1902, the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the current team) moved here to play their home games at Hiltop Pk as the NY Highlanders (now the Yankees) until it was burnned down in 1913 making them share with the NY Giants over in the Polo Grounds. In the 1920's, Yeshiva University moved it campus here. In 1931, the GWB was built, with a lower deck added in 1962, as having the longest span at the time and to give vehicular access to NJ. In 1963, the Alexander Hamilton Br was built to provide additional vehicular access to The Bronx and as part of the the Cross Bronx Expwy (I-95) with a direct route to the GWB by the Trans Manhattan Expwy. Washington Hts had went through bad times with the number of drug dealers and other criminals. The postwar era had a change from going from Irish and Jewish residents to Domincans. Other problems had been with issues involving gentrification with those fearing that they would be priced out. The area got better durring the 1980's with non-profit groups revitalizing the place. For those who don't know, just go to Riverside Pk underneath the GWB, and you can find a little red lighthouse that has been there for some time as one of NYC's hidden treasures. Just as the PABT on 42nd St goes to places south of NYC, the PABT on 177th St goes to places north of NYC. Bennet Pk is home to Manhattan's highest natural point known as the Mountain of Manhattan. there are many who refer to the northern end as Hudson Hts to distinguish it from the rest. You can get here by taking the subway to 157th St (1), 155th St-St Nicholas Ave (C), 163rd St-Amsterdam Ave (C), 168th St-Washington Hts (A, C, 1), 175th St-GWBT (A), 181st St-Broadway (1), 181st St-St Nicholas Ave (A), 190th St-Overlook Terr (A), and 191st St (1). Here is what you will find in Washington Hts.
