| Heading east brings us into the hood known as Downtown. It goes from Atlantic Ave to the BQE (I-278) between Cadman Plaza W, with Court St, and Ashland Pl. This hood is mostly commercial. Originally, it was home to the Lenape Indians until the Dutch came to settle it in the 1600's giving it the name Breuckelen, which was later Anglified to its current spelling by the English in 1664 when they took over the colony. In 1776, this area faced a lot of troops from both the British/Continental Armies durring the Battle of LI, which resulted in a loss for the Americans, who were lead by George Washington. In 1834, the city charter of Brooklyn was established to make this area location of the city government for Brooklyn with a city (now borough hall) that was built in 1849. In 1844, the LIRR placed a terminal here that would be on Court St until it would be declared obsolete in 1859 as they would move it to Hunters Pt for a bigger terminal than that one. Durring the 1850's and 1860's, there were a number of churches that were parts of the Underground Railroad in their protest against slavery, which lead to the firing of Walt Whitman form the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for having that view. In 1883, the Brooklyn Br was built to allow for a connection to Manhattan. In 1888, came the Myrtle/5th Ave Els allowing for faster transportation throughout Brooklyn. In 1909, the Manhattan Br was completed for additional vehicular access to Manhattan. In 1926, LIU located its campus here even though Brooklyn wasn't officially considered part of LI. The postwar brough a lot of changes to downtown Brooklyn such as widening of some of the streets such as Adams St. In 1949, many of the els there saw demolition as they were being obsolete to the subways as buses replaced their routes. In the 1980's, much of downtown Brooklyn was demolished to make way for a complex known as MTC, which was owned by the infamous Bruce Ratner, who is the head of FCR, in the claim that it would help revitalize the area when that wasn't the case. His complex included locations for Polytechnic University and a new home for LIU. Unfortunately, it didn't help a lot as numerous businesses were priced out especially G&T in 2004 when the latest rennovation caused it to move. There are a number of new appartments, mostly luxury, being built in the last number of years. Juniors is one of the few long time businesses to still be here, which is known for its famous Brooklyn style cheesecakes. The NY Transit Museum sits underground in the defunct Court St Station, and gives the history of not only the subways and trains, but other infarstructure as well. You can get here by taking the subway to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts (A, C, G), Dekalb Ave-Flatbush Ave (B, M, Q, R), Hoyt St-Dekalb Ave (2, 3), Lawrence St-MTC (M, R), Borough Hall-Court St (2, 3, 4, 5), Jay St-Borough Hall (A, C, F), and High St-Brooklyn Br (A, C). Here is what you will find in Downtown. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
