Heading north brings us into the hood known as Fulton Ferry. It goes from the BQE (I-278) to the East River between Old Fulton and Jay Sts. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was first settled by Cornelis Dircksen, who was a lone ferryman in the 1630's. In 1642, the Dutch began to establish farms as the ferries provide for transport across the river. In 1814, Robert Fulton brough steamboat service to Manhattan allowing for more passengers to ride at once giving the dock it left from being named Fulton's Landing. Throughout the 1800's, the area became industrialized. In 1883, the Brooklyn Br was built and started to bring the services of ferries going across to an end. In 1904, a streetcar system known as JSCR was made to provide for faster service. In 1909, the Manhattan Br was built for additional vehicular access to Manhattan. The postwar era wasn't to kind to Fulton Ferry as the BQE was built as a barrier from the rest of Brooklyn and that the streetcar had stopped service in 1959. Artists had found homes here for just being a subway ride away and realtors gave nicknamed it DUMBO, meaning Down Under Manhattan Br Overpass. Although much of its historic architecture is still here, there are some new skyscrapers that were built. You can get here by taking the subway York St (F).
