| Heading east brings us into the hood known as Vinegar Hill. It goes from the BQE (I-278) to the East River between Jay/Navy Sts. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was settled by two Dutch families, the Remsens and the Rapelyes back in the 1600's. In 1801, John Jackson bought the land that was owned by Comfort/Joshua Sands and named it Vinegar Hill after the Irish battle that occurred in Ireland in 1798 against the British. Throughout much of the 1800's, many had commuted to NYC by ferries and later by steam engine as the area become industrialized. In 1909, the Manhattan Br was built, and it pretty much ended the ferry service b/c it gave a more free connection to Manhattan. There has been little change after the postwar era for Vinegar Hill. Although part of it was landmarked, another part was not and was allowed for new construction. However, many like to come to Vinegar Hill for its historic architecture. You can get here by taking the subway to York St (F). Here is what you will find in Vinegar Hill. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
