Default NYC:Brooklyn hoods-Fort Greene

Heading south brings us into the hoods known as Ft Greene. It goes from Atlantic Ave to the BQE (I-278) between Ashland Pl and Vanderbuilt Ave. This hood is mostly residnetial. Originally, it was home to the Canarsie Indians until it was settled by Jansen de Rapelje in 1637 from the Dutch West India Co. In 1649, Peter Caesar Alberti started a tobacco plantation near the bay, but was killed by Native Americans. In 1776, Ft Putnam was errected to help the Continental Army fight against the British durring the Battle of LI, and was maintained by Nathaniel Greene, who the fort was later renamed for. In 1836, the Brooklyn & Jamaica RR (today the Atlantic Ave line of the LIRR) was built to allow for transporation all the way to Queens. In 1847, Washington (now Ft Greene) Pk was created as Brooklyn's very first park. With the addition of ferry and steamboat service, the population exploded and the area became dotted with farms who had their farmers make frequent commutes to NYC along with many rows being built for others. In 1888, the Myrtle Ave El allowed for additional transportation along with others that went on Fulton/Laffayette Sts. In 1908, the BAM had moved from its original location from Brooklyn Hts to be here. In 1929, WSB needed more office space and had moved from Williamsburg to move to Ft Green to errect Brooklyn's tallest building. The postwar era at first wasn't too kind to Ft Greene as it became a slum in many of its parts. In the 1950's and 1960's, the els were demolished for being obsolete to the subways. Housing projects were built to accomadate for them, but it wasn't enough. In the 1990's, the imfamous Bruce Ratner, who is the of FCR, built the Atlanic Ctr Mall, but many Ft Greene residents called it turnning his back on them b/c there was no entrance on Hanson Pl and just one Atlantic Ave only. More recently, he got the air rights over the Altantic Terminal and made it into a mall, which has still yet to be completely filled, to go with the one he already built. Ft Greene is known for having Prison Ship Martyrs Monument and Vault in Ft Greene Pk, though the elevator has been closed for some time. Unfortunately, the WSB no longer allows for vistors to go to the observation deck, which has been closed since the late 1970's for unknown reasons. You can get here by taking the subway to Dekalb Ave (D, M, Q, R), Atlantic Ave-Flatubush Ave (B, Q, 2, 3, 4, 5), Fulton St-Elliot Pl (G), and Lafayette Ave (C) along with taking the Atlantic Ave line of the LIRR to the Flatbush Ave Station. Here is what you will find in Ft Greene.

Default How about some photo credit?

You have used several of my photos, apparently from my flickr account, without giving me credit and without hyperlinking back to the flickr photo page, which is the requirement for use of my flickr photos.

My photos are:
Atlantic Terrace construction on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Atlantic Yards footprint, looking west on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

sofa with (egg) YOLK on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Please give me credit for each photo and link back to their flickr web pages or remove them immediately.

Unfortunately, when a fourmer doesn't touch their threads for some time, it can't be edited, but I will promise that no more of your pics will be used in any future threads, especially when doing Prospect Hts. This is not b/c I am refusing to do so, it is b/c this how it works here, b/c if I could remove them, I would have done that by now, so take it up with the fourm administration on why the edit button doesn't stay there instead of with me. If you have followed these neighborhood tours of NYC, I had placed a disclaimer on the very first one, which was the Financial Dist of Manhattan, that the shots aren't mine, and many here know about that. Honestly, I am not fond of photosnobs, who are either known for taking shots to promote themselves, or try to rearrange rules on message boards such as artificial barries of seperating theirs from those found in that it does matter for the location of their photos in that it matters a lot to them. No offense, but I don't find taking constant pictures a special ability, b/c if my grandmother can do it, then it's not special. Overall, let this slide, especially b/c this wasn't for commercial purposes to which I am not, just to show an overview of an area that most will probably never see or know of the city. For the record, I didn't ask No Land Grab to link this thread to their site, they did that on their own. On a sidenote, I am that person with the Mets cap you met at that Spanish resturaunt in the Williamsburg section months back when you were going to be there and the 'B' is the first letter of my last name, which is Barzilai.

Tal,

I'm not saying that you can't or shouldn't use my photos, only that you give me credit if you do.

I believe giving credit to the photographer (or any other producer of media whose work you reproduce) is just basic respect. If you thought a photo was good enough to use, then the least you could do is to let your readers know who the photographer is, in case they want to get more information, see other photos, hire for them assignments, etc.

Even if the photographer doesn't care about the possible opportunities that use of their photos may generate, I think it's just being respectful of the time, money and effort it took to make their photos available to you for free.

Sure, "taking constant pictures" is not a "special ability," So what? Someone had to spend time and money to produce the photos that you use; they have real costs. And, in return for free use of their photos, giving credit to the photographer seems like a small price to pay.

If this is being a photosnob, then I'm guilty as charged.

And, I know you didn't ask NoLandGrab to link to this site. I have no problem with that.

Tracy, the reason I use that word was b/c I have had encounters with those people who keep thinking that message boards are all about them. They have even demanded that message boards be reformatted to give them all priorities just b/c they take shots and others do not. The main reason is b/c they claim that they don't like the fact that their threads keep on sinking when this is the case for anything on them, and why they wanted a special section just for them when in fact most photographers don't even spend anytime on message boards. The suffix 'snob' is a just another way of saying egoist or narcissist. I am just tired of others saying that they are better just b/c they can do this or that. On a sidenote, don't be too negative b/c the Mets just loss a chance to be in the playoffs for the second striaght season, and I need the time to get over that, and I have been through a lot of things already for the past week.
