Heading east brings us into the hood known as Clinton Hill. It goes from Atlantic Ave to the BQE (I-278) between Vanderbuilt/Classon Aves. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly farmland that were Dutch and later on British and Americans. In 1836, the Brooklyn & Jamaica RR was built to allow for transportation all the way to Queens. In the 1840's, the area became home to a number of wealthy residents who had built their mansions along the avenues as it became known as Clinton Hill. In 1887, Charles Pratt founded Pratt Inst for eductation along with the first free public library for Brooklyn. In 1888, els were built along Myrtle Ave and Fulton St to provide transporation throughout Brooklyn. By the 1890's, Clinton Ave alone became a prestigous block. In 1916, St Joseph's College was founded as another college for learning, and it was moved to its present site a few blocks over two years later. In the 1950's and 1960's, the els were demolished as they became obsolete to the subway. The price of Clinton Hill became more affordable as hipsters began to live there. Clinton Hill still remained a prestigous place for Brooklyn despite what happened in the postwar era. You can get here by taking the subway to Clinton/Washington Aves-Lafayette Ave (C), Clinton/Washington Aves-Fulton St (G), and Classon Ave (G). Here is what you will find in Clinton Hill.
