Default NYC:Brooklyn hoods-Bedford-Stuyvesant

Heading east brings into the hood known as Bed-Stuy. It goes from Atlantic to Flushing Aves, between Classon Ave and Broadway, with Saratoga Ave. This hood is mostly residnetial. Originally, this was originally farmland that was first owned by the Dutch as part of the Village of Bedford. The nearby community was known as Stuyvesant Hts after Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch Colonial Governor. In the 1700's, it was noted as the first major settlement in SE Brooklyn. In 1836, the Brooklyn & Jamaica RR was built to allow for transportation all the way to Queens. In 1870, St John's College was originally located here before moving to its current location. In 1878, the Brooklyn, Coney Island & Flatbush RR was built to allow for transportation to as far south as Coney Island. In 1888, the Fulton Elevated RR gave additional transportation to downtown Brooklyn as did the Myrtle Ave El. Many brownstones were built as housing for the many new residents it was recieving. The postwar era brought a number of blacks to the place, which surpassed that of Harlem as NYC's most black neighborhood. In the 1950's, the Fulton St El was demolished as it was declared obsolete to the subway that was below it as did the Myrtle Ave El in 1969. The 1960's, brought a number of racial riots that plagued Bedford-Stuyvesant. Despite that, the area improoved in recent years. You can get here by taking the subway to Classon Ave (G), Franklin Ave-Fulton St (C, S), Nostrand Ave-Fulton St (A, C), Bedford-Nostrand Ave (G), Myrtle-Willoughby Aves (G), Flushing Ave-Marcy Ave (G), Flushing Ave-Broadway (J, M), Myrtle Ave-Broadway (J, M, Z), Kosciuszko St (J), Gates Ave (J, Z), Kingston-Throop Aves (C), Utica Ave (A, C), and Ralph Ave (C) as well as taking the Atlantic Ave line of the LIRR to the Nostrand Ave Station. Here is what you will find in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
