Default NYC:Brooklyn hoods-Williamsburg

Heading north brings us into the hood known as Williamsburg. It goes from Flushing Ave to Grand St, with S 6th St, between Bushwick Ave and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. It was originally settled in 1638 by the Dutch West India Co after purchasing it from Native Americans. In 1661, it was charttered as the town of Boswijck, but it was taken over by the English a few years later and they anglicized the name to Bushwick. In 1827, Williamsburgh was incorporated as its own village, and became a town of its own in 1840, seperating from Bushwick, plus it became its own city in 1852. In 1875, WSB was located here until it was moved for a bigger location for its headquarters in 192 In 1903, the Williamburg Br was built for vehicular/subway access to Manhattan, and became the largest suspension bridge in the world until the Bear Mountain Br, located further up the Hudson River, was surpassed it in 1924. At first Williamsburg was home to Hassidic Jews, but later on to Hispanics, though many had stayed despite the traumas of the Holocaust after WWII. The postwar era made it difficult for longtime residents to remain especially with the movement of yuppies and hippsters causing the rents to go up. Even though much of Williamsburg is historically preserved, there are some new developements. You can get here by taking the subway to Marcy Ave (J, M, Z), Hewes St (J, M), Lorimer St (J, M), Flushing Ave-Broadway (J, M), Flushing Ave-Marcy Ave (G), Broadway-Montrose St (G), Grand St-Bushwick Ave (L), and Montrose Ave-Bushwick Ave (L). Here is what you will find in Williamsburg.
