Default NYC:Brooklyn hoods-Greenpoint

Heading north brings us into the hood known as Greenpoint. It goes from N 12th, with Bayard/Leonard Sts, to Newtown Creek between the BQE (I-278) and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was owned by the Dutch West India Co in 1638 after purchasing it from the Keshaechqueren Indians. In 1645, Dirck Volchertsen lived here with his family and was joined by others such as Jacobus Calyer Home a year later. In 1657, some Dutch settlers went by the East River and gave it the name Green Pt after how they saw the land. In 1790, ferry service was given from Geenpoint to lower Manhattan. In 1834, Greenpoint was transformed into a town by Neziah Bliss, who had most of Newton Creek. In 1838, the Penny Br was built, which was originally named for having to charge a penny for the toll until it was removed in 1878. The 1840's, made the area into a shipping industry that had dominated for nearly the next century. In the 1850's, the Blissville Drawbridge was built for additional access to Queens, but went through a number of changes and replacements over the years until its present day form in 1987 when it was renamed to JJ Bryne Memorial Br. In 1862, the Monitor was built here as it was sent to the south for the Union Army in the Battle of Mobile Bay that was two years later. In 1939, the Kosciuszko Br was built as part of the BQE as the Penny Br was removed for it. In 1954, the Pulaski Br was built to allow for the more western reaches, though it was recontructed to its present day form in 1994. Greenpoint still has a large population of Polish residents, though Hispanics are starting to live here. Until recently, its architecture was historically preserved until a recent rezoning was passsed allowing for out of character buildings like the ones over by McCarren Pk. You can get here by taking the subway to Nassau Ave (G) and Greenpoint Ave (G). Here is what you will find in Greenpoint.
