| Heading east brings us into the hood known as Bushwick. It goes from Broadway to the Queens line between Flushing/Cooper Aves. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was purchased in 1638 by the Dutch West India Co who had secured a deed from the Canarsie Indians. In 1660, the area was settled by a number of French and Hugenot settlers along with Peter Jan De Witt, a Dutch translator, and Franciscus the Negro, one of the 11 slaves that had worked for New Netherlands for freedom. A year later Peter Stuyvesant had chartered the land and named it Boswijck after either town in the woods or heavy woods. By the start of the 1800's, Bushwick had consisted of other places such as Greenpoint and Williamsburgh until they got their own distinction later on. Bushwick Shore became a major ferry point until it was drained. The mid 1800's brought a number of industry to Bushwick, especially with the breweries that were done by German immigrants who gave it the name Brewer's Row. In 1889, the Myrtle Ave El was built to allow for transportation to both downtown Brooklyn and to Queens. In the early 1900's, Amphion Theater was built as the nation's first theater with electrical lighting as part of developing Bushwick. Prohibition caused the German population to decline as many of them were no longer allowed to work in the breweries as many of them were replaced by Italians. The postwar era brought a number of blacks and PRs to Bushwick as the area went into decline. In 1977, numerous stores were being pilaged on Broadway durring the blackout. Ed Koch, repsonded to this event by having affordable housing and other cultural institutions over in Bushwicks to help solve some of the problems. More recently, a number of hipsters have came to live here, though some feel that it will cause rents to increase and making it more expensive to live in. You can get here by taking the subway to Myrtle Ave-Broadway (J, M, Z), Kosciuszko St (J), Gates Ave (J, Z), Halsey Ave-Broadway (J), Central Ave (L), Knickerbocker Ave (M), Myrtle/Wyckoff Aves (L, M), Jefferson St (L), Dekalb Ave-Wyckoff Ave (L), and Halsey St-Wyckoff Ave (L). Here is what you will find in Bushwick. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [imghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3243/2822211391_687d1163c0_b.jpg[/img] ![]() [img]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3285/2796661761_f5c83cce82_o.jpg/img] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [img]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3166/2782253944_7ec6a74a18_b.jpg() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
