Heading west brings us into the hood known as Ocean Hill. It goes from East NY Ave to to Broadway between Saragtoga and Van Sindren Aves, with Ralph/Atlantic Aves. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly just hilly land that was left vacant until the Brooklyn & Jamaica RR was built in 1839 to allow for transportation to both downtown Brooklyn and to Queens. In the mid 1800's, it was part of Stuyvesant Hts for a time. In 1890, it got its own distinction and was divided by taking the name Ocean Hill for its many hills. Most of its residents were mainly Italian in the early part of the 1900's. In the 1960's, there were many Jews and blacks that moved in. Just like Bushwick, Ocean Hill also experienced a number of stores that were ransacked durring the 1977 blackout. It wasn't until the 1990's that rennovation and new projects came here. Unfortunately, the gentrification has been leading to a decline in its residents before and been allowing for newer residents such as whites, Hispanics, and Asians. You can get here by taking the subway to Halsey St (J), Chauncey St (J, Z), Rockaway Ave (C), Broadway Junction (A, C, J, L, Z), and Atlantic Ave-Van Sindren Ave (L) as well as taking the Altantic Ave Line of the LIRR to the East NY Station. Here is what you will find in Ocean Hill.
