Heading south brings us into the hood known as Wingate. It goes from Clarkson Ave to Eastern Pkwy between NY/Utica Aves with East NY and Rochester Aves. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was known as Pigtown for the many pig farms that were there at the time that supplyed much of Kings County for its pork products. Around the start of the 1900's, the farms were sold and made into lots for other property, which some of it was used for hospitals. For a time it was associated mainly with Crown Hts, East Flatbush, or even Lefferts Gardens until it got its own distinction in the 1950's when it was named Wingate after the high school that was built there, which was after General George W Wingate, who founded the NRA. Except for building new houses and apartments, there hasn't been that much change here. You can get here by taking the subway to Kingston Ave-Eastern Pkwy (3) or Crown Hts-Utica Ave (4).
